Ghajnsielem Week: Day 1
Thanksgiving Mass to Archpriest J. Zerafa

(Saturday, 2nd December
2006)

The first day of activities started with a daytrip to Malta. The group left with the 7.30am ferry and visited the Mdina Bastions, Mdina Experience, Birgu Waterfront, the Maritime Museum and the Inquisitors Palace. The last stop was in Valletta where many took the opportunity to make some Christmas shopping.

During the evening, the main organisation joined a large number of people at a thanksgiving Mass with outgoing Archpriest Can. Joseph Zerafa, pastoral leader of the Ghajnsielem for the last 25 years. The Archpriest Emeritus appeared visibly moved during the ceremony. He thanked all his family and the local people for their support during his leadership years.

At the end of the 90-minute function, Gozo Bishop Mgr Mario Grech made a surprise visit. He spoke for the priests and people who were present and expressed words of gratitude for Can. Zerafa's services to the village of Ghajnsielem.

A reception was held shortly afterwards at the Ghajnsielem Parish Center. Here, Archpriest Emeritus Can. Joseph Zerafa was presented with several commemorative gifts from all the main organizations of the village.

The 'Ghajnsielem Week' is the revival of an old tradition of dedicating 7 days of celebrations for our village. The activities will practically involve all the main organizations in Ghajnsielem and will include day trips, get-together events, gala dinner, festivals, competitions and even a youth night.
