Lelio Spitero
won the 13th edition of the 'Gieh Ghajnsielem' Award for
his outstanding contribution towards the development of the Ghajnsielem
community. Beside volunteering in countless of local
activities, Lelio was instrumental in setting up Radju
Lauretana. Mayor Francis Cauchi handed the award during a special
Gala Dinner organized by the Ghajnsielem Local Council.
Lelio Spiteri was born on
the 26th of May 1973 at St. Catherin (H’Attard) the son
of Charles Spiteri and Salvina nee’ Azzopardi. He was
educated at the Bishop's Conservatory, Lawra Vicuna
Primary School and later at Victoria's Ninu Cremona
Junior Lyceum. At a very young age he served as an altar
boy at the Ghajnsielem Parish and the age of ten he also had the
opportunity to spend 30 days volunteering at the
Vatican. After completing secondary school he was
admitted at the Sixth Form and a year later he started
the Bachelor of Education (Hons) course at the
University of Malta. Lelio graduated four years later
(1994) as a teacher. He started his teaching practice in
Qala at the Anton Buttigieg Primary School. Between 1995
and 1998 he followed the Masters in Education at the
University of Malta and a few years later (2003) he was
awarded a Diploma in School Administration at the same
University. After thirteen years as a primary school
teacher he was appointed Assistant Head at the Sir
Arthur Mercieca school in Victoria - a post which he
still holds today.
Lelio is very active in the
broadcasting sector especially in Radio transmission. He
was awarded a Diploma in Mass Media in June 1998 and he
started to work with RTK Radio Station where he produced
and presented several programs with different themes. He
gave a strong contribution to 'Lehen il-Qala' Community
Radio. In 1999, Lelio had a short but interesting
working experience with the Vatican Radio. His program 'Edukazzjoni
ta' Uliedna' was even awarded as the 'Best Education
Program 2002' by the Broadcasting Authority.
Lelio is heavily involved in
the Ghajnsielem community especially where Parish
activities are involved. He led the Lauretana Choir for
the last 20 years and volunteered as a presenter for
local village activities on countless occasions. He is
also involved in the 'Ghajnsielem' magazine and in
several other pastoral activities.
Finally, he was instrumental
to set up Radju Lauretana. The dream of many
Ghajnslemizi finally came through as Ghajnsielem's
community radio started broadcasting in August 2007.
