Ghajnsielem
welcomes Dun Gorg’s Reliquary
(Tuesday, 5th June
2007)
After the canonization ceremony in Rome, where Dun Gorg
Preca (now San Gorg Preca) was proclaimed the first
Maltese Catholic Saint, the reliquary containing his
blood was brought to by Bishop Mario Grech where it was
taken around the main villages for the veneration of the
people.
The first on the list was Ghajnsielem where Archpriest
Can. Frankie Bajada welcomed Gozo Bishop Mario Grech and
the postulator for the cause of Malta's first canonized
saint, Mgr Charles Scicluna after being transported to
Gozo at 3.30 p.m. Hundreds of Ghajnsilmizi packed the
church to witness and pray for this man of God.
At 4.30pm, after just 45minutes, the reliquary left the
Ghajnsielem parish and headed to the village of Qala. A
Concelebrated Mass led by Mgr Grech at the Gozo
Cathedral started at 7 p.m. The relic will return to
Malta on June 6 at 6 p.m.
The blood found in the reliquary was donated by
Dr.Lawrence Spiteri, who was Dun Gorg's home doctor. In
all, Dr.Spiteri had kept three tubes with Dun Gorg's
blood. Besides the one he donated to the St.Gaetan
church, he also donated another to the Museum Society
while he kept the third one himself. San Gorg isbest
known for establishing the Society of Christian
Doctrine, better known as M.U.S.E.U.M. His road to
sainthood was initiated in 1975, and he was declared
Venerable in June 2000. He beatified on 9 May 2001 by
Pope John Paul II during his second visit to Malta. He
was raised to sainthood by Pope Benedict XVI in June
2007.
