The Gozo
Cultural Council organized the ‘Festa Niċeċ’ (Feast of
Niches), a series of events highlighting the ‘little
street chapels’ and bring out their cultural,
folkloristic and artistic aspects so that they may be
better appreciated by contemporary society.
Several
tours were organised during this weekend and Ghajnsielem
was one of the localities visited. Of particular
interest to the Ghajnsilmizi was the last day of
activities when a traditional “Festa tan-Niċċa” (as
celebrated up to 30 years ago) was held next to the
niche of Our Lady of Loreto in Għajn Qatet Street,
Victoria. Several traditional folk dances, ground and
aerial fireworks and local traditions related to the
feast of Saint Martin were held during this
re-enactment.
