After three months of hard
work, the dream of several volunteers finally became a
reality because on Saturday evening, 5.00pm, 'Bethlehem
f' Ghajnsielem' was officially opened by the Hon. Prime
Minister Lawrence Gonzi and blessed by
Gozo Bishop Mgr. Mario Grech.
Mayor Francis Cauchi and
project manager Franco Ciangura then accompanied the
Prime Minister around the nativity village. The first
stop was at the carpenter house animated by Karmnu
Xuereb 's family. The nearby blacksmith was animated by
Guzi Mallia and his family. The Prime Minister then
visited the sheperd's cave and then headed to the Bakery
which was animated by Frank and Lorietta Buttigieg. Next
stop was the market where the Franciscan community
headed by Fra Lorry was selling natural fruits, fresh
fish and vegetables. The Prime Minister then stopped at
the crafts centre and was visibly enjoying himself
seeing locals working on traditional Maltese crafts. The
final stop was at the grotto with Mary, Joseph and baby
Jesus.
Mayor Francis Cauchi then
made a short speech were he thanked Mr Franco Ciangura
while explaining that 'Ta Passi' fields was just an
abandoned area up till a few weeks ago. The Hon. Prime
Minister Lawrence Gonzi thanked all the volunteers
adding that he was especially impressed with the fine
details that 'Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem' offered. He
augured that this village will be a place of unity for
all the families.
The unique atmosphere was
enacted with the fact that the nativity village was full
of animals while the actors walking with the oil lamps
in the dark fields made it more special. Fort Chambray
was also lit with several small bonfires creating the
effect of the city of Bethlehem. It is interesting to
note that more then 80 actors are animating the nativity
village, all under the responsibility of Joanne
Debrincat of Ghaqda Drammatika Ghajnsielem.
The nativity village will
remain open all day until Sunday 4th of January. It
will be animated with live actors on weekends on public
holidays. The general public is already taking a huge
interest in this attraction and in fact 'Ta Passi'
Fields was flooded with thousands of people during the
whole weekend including Monday 8th December, public
holiday.
