During
the Maundy Thursday Mass, the commemoration of the last
supper of Jesus Christ and the institution of the
Eucharist and Ordination are celebrated. Archpriest Fr.
Frankie Bajjada presided at the evening Mass which
started at 6.00pm. As the traditional practice there was
the washing of feet a ritual that involves the priest
washing the feet of twelve parishioners chosen in
advance to represent Jesus’ washing the feet of the
twelve apostles. The twelve parishioners were selected
from the the Fraternity of the Rosary and the Sacrament
Before the celebration was over Christ's Body present in
the consecrated Host was carried in solemn procession to
the Altar of Repose, where it will remain there until
the communion service on Good Friday.
Maundy Thursday is in Maltese known as "Hamis ix-Xirka".
During the evening, many people thronged to visit the
traditional Seven Churches (in Maltese called the 'Seba
Vizti') at various localities to reciting prayers. The
Ghajnsielem Parish was decorated for the Holy Week while
the main parvis stairs was filled with small candles
forming a large sentence reading:
"Mhux
dak li rrid jien. Imma dak li trid int"
A last supper exhibition was also held at the old
Parish Centre in Independence square. (photos)
