Local Council holds AGM

(Monday, 24th March
2008)

In accordance with Section 70 of the Local Councils Act (Act No. XV of 1993), the Ghajnsielem Local Council held its last Annual Public Meeting before the newly elected administration is sworn.

Mayor Francis Cauchi gave an in-depth analysis of all the works which were carried our during the last three years while mentioning the the different projects which are planned for the next few years. The Civic Center project has reached an advanced stage and is now awaiting the final feedback from MEPA. If the project is accepted by the planning board, works will start immediately.

For the 'Ta Passi' Recreational Park, the Local Council is working closely with a consultancy agency specializing in this field. The agency is drawing a highly detailed report with plans and suggestions while analysing the environmental impact of surrounding areas. The agency is also working to obtain EU funds for this project.  Once the full report is completed, public consultation will take place.

One of the issues raised during the meeting was the dire state of the Pjazza. Francis Cauchi emphasized that unless an agreement is reached, the Local Council cannot embellish or maintain the area since this is a privately-owned property.

Meanwhile, the 2008 - 2011 administration will be officially sworn in during the next few days.
Francis Cauchi has been re-elected Mayor or the sixth time, while Stephen Mercieca has been re-confirmed as deputy Mayor. The rest of the five-seat council will include Larry Buttigieg, Joseph Camilleri and Peter Caruana.
