War Victims Remembered

(Sunday, 9th November
2008)
 

This morning, Ghajnsielem joined the rest of the Commonwealth to mark Remembrance Day to honour the victims of the two world wars. Several people gathered to pay tribute to the victims War Memorial in a short but commemorative ceremony was organized by the Ghajnsielem Local Council. Mayor Francis Cauchi made a short speech for the occasion.

Shortly afterwards, the Mayor together with representatives from the main organizations and relative of the victims laid flowers and bouquets around the monument. Archpriest Can. Frankie Bajada concluded the ceremony with a short prayer.

Special services are held at war memorials and churches in numerous countries and in several villages in Malta and Gozo on the second Sunday of November, the Sunday closest to November 11 marking the signing of Armistice on the same day of 1918, that signalled the end of World War I.

The War Monument, which is situated at Chambray Street, was inaugurated in May 1995 in honour of the Ghajnsilmizi who died during the two World Wars.
