The Ghajnsielem Parish and
St Anthony's Church observed Maundy Thursday by
celebrating
the commemoration of the
last supper of Jesus Christ and institution of
Eucharist and Ordination. As
a traditional practice there was the washing of feet a
ritual that involves the priest washing the feet of
twelve parishioners chosen in advance to represent
Jesus’ washing the feet of the twelve apostles. The
twelve parishioners in the Ghajnsielem Parish were
selected from the the Fraternity of the Rosary and the
Sacrament while the twelve apostles of the Franciscan
Community were chosen
parishioners of St Anthony's
street.
Before the celebration was over Christ's Body present in
the consecrated Host was carried in solemn procession to
the Altar of Repose, where it will remain there until
the communion service on Good Friday. Maundy Thursday is
in Maltese known as "Hamis ix-Xirka". During the
evening, many people thronged to visit the traditional
Seven Churches (in Maltese called the 'Seba Vizti') at
various localities reciting prayers.
In Ghajnsielem, many
visitors took the opportunity to view the Holy Week
Exhibition at St Joseph Band Club, the Golgota model
adjacent Radju Lauretana Studios and the Last Supper
Table at St. Anthony's Youth Center.
