Ghajnsielem local council gets special funds
(Thursday, 15th April 2010)

The Ghajnsielem Local Council together with other 15 local councils signed an agreement with MEPA to fund projects that will help improve the quality of life for residents living in these localities. The sum of over €860,000 is being made available to these Local Councils and central government through the Urban Improvement Fund (UIF) scheme which is managed by the Authority.

The funds allocated for Ghajnsielem will be used to embellish the Old Parish Square, the 10th December Square (adjacent the band club) and the area around the main square, specifically Chambray Street in front of the clubs.

Mayor Francis Cauchi said that such funds are being invested to regenerate our village core in order to increase tourism and enhance quality of life. Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Local Councils Dr. Chris Said said that, “Government wants to achieve the goal of having sustainable localities and this can be reached only if urban environment is improved.” Mr Austin Walker, MEPA Chairman said that “These projects not only promote but also improve the local environment and increase the potential of our towns and villages.”

Recently, Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Chris Said also donated books to Mayor Francis Cauchi to be used in the public librery which will soon form part of the civic centr, presently under construction. This was part of the campaign  "Il-ktieb pass 'il boghod minnek".
