The old statue of our Lady
of Home which until a few
years ago was used in the
demonstration march at 'Tal-Balzunetta'
in Mgarr Road has once again
found its place in the feast
programme after the St.
Joseph Band funded the
restoration works.
St Joseph Band and Qala's 'Ite
ad Joseph' started the
traditional Thursday's band
march from Simirat Street.
When the band march arrived
in Independence Square, the
St. Joseph Band welcomed the
statue from the Old Church's
parvis among the applause of
the general public. Several
youths from the band's
society carried the statue
with the band march ending
in front of the St Joseph
Band's premises at midnight.
The statue was than placed
on a pedestal.
The statue was displayed
last in public in 2005
during Friday's
demonstration march because
a year later, it was
replaced by a new statue.
The old statue, work of
Wistin Camilleri dating back
to 1949 will now be placed
in a niche which is being
built in the main hall of
the Band club's premises. A
detailed article on the
history of this statue is
found on the St Joseph
Band's 2010 feast
publication.
The St Joseph Band decided
to restore this statue to
preserve it for future
generations while being the
society's gift to the
Ghajnslemizi for the feast
of Our Lady of Loreto.
