The final phase of the restoration of the dome of the
Archparish church was finally completed when the lantern was
crowned with a wooden cross. The cross which was blessed
during the midnight mass on Christmas eve is almost two
metres high and over a metre wide.
The cross is made in teak wood and was design by Innocent
Centorino of Żurrieq. The work was left in the hands of Guzi
Mallia.
The restoration of the dome
started early last year after cracks started to develop on
the upper part, leading to water leakage and other related
problems. The lantern
(upper part of the cupola) has been rebuilt from scratch by local master mason Leli Saliba (Bufajra) and
his son.
