Memorable experience for
St Joseph Band in Sicily (Wednesday, 30th June 2010)
For the
second year running, the St Joseph Band
proudly performed a magnificent performance
in Palazzolo Acreide near Siracua, Sicily in
occasion for the feast of St Paul. The
strong 80-people delegation arrived in
Sicily on the 27th of June to represent
Ghajnsielem and Malta during a 4-Day trip in
Sicily for the feast of St Paul in Palazzolo
Acreide near Siracusa.
The strong 80-people delegation, out of
which 50 were bandsmen, arrived in Sicily on
the 28th of June. The band took part in a
short band march in the villa communale
on the first day, a 3-hour giro di gala
around the main streets of village and a
highly praised 2-hour concert in the main
square on feast day. The trip also included
an afternoon shopping at Auchan and Siracusa
and a day trip to Mount Etna and Toarmina.
Many were once again impressed by the feast
celebrations especially the spectacular
fireworks, the shouts of the people, the
firecrackers and the bells making so much
noise that makes one hear nothing! There
were some touching moments such as when the
St Joseph Band played 'Viva x-Xemx' as the
statue of St Paul passed in front of the
Maltese delegation just before the
procession ended.
The trip was made possible with the
collaboration of Mr Ray Bondin, UNESCO
representative who is also currently living
in Ghajnsielem.

The group departed from
Gozo with the 4.00am ferry. After a slight technical delay,
the Maria Dolores catamaran arrived at Pozzallo around
10.30am where two coaches transferred the group to the
hotels. In the afternoon, many took the opportunity to visit
the various attractions of Palazzolo Acreide which includes
the famous baroque historical centre, six different Churches
and the ancient Greek town of Akrai. In the evening, the St
Joseph Band played a short march in the gardens of the villa
communale.
