Ghajnsielem F.C. opens redesigned bar area
(Friday, 23rd December 2011)

The Ghajnsielem Football Club recently celebrated the opening of the new Clubhouse. The Azzopardi family, the new operator of the Club’s catering facilities, redesigned the bar area to create a stunning, modern ambiance which they are sure will be a big hit with the Club’s members and their guests.

The Club also took the opportunity to celebrate its 75th anniversary. MC Alex Spiteri invited all present to observe a minute silence before start of proceedings in remembrance of ex-Club President Dr. Victor Bajada who passed away earlier this month, ex-Archpriest of Ghajnsielem Mons. Guzepp Zerafa who passed away earlier this year and of all the Club’s ex-officials, coaches, players and members who are no longer with us.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono and the Club’s lawyer and MP Dr. Anton Refalo officially opened the Clubhouse in the presence of a large number of the Club’s members and their guests. Mons. Anton Gauci blessed the Clubhouse and a commemorative plaque was also unveiled.

Club President Mr. Martin Xerri, Dr. Refalo, The Minister for Gozo and G.F.A. President Mr. Alvin Grech addressed those present with brief speeches that essentially congratulated the Club on its 75th anniversary and the new Clubhouse operators for the wonderful job they did in reconfiguring the Club premises.

In addition to congratulating the Azzopardi family for the marvellous work designed by ex-Blacks player and ex-Secretary, Mr. Eric Mercieca, President Xerri thanked the numerous volunteers who contributed countless hours of work to get the place ready before Christmas and to spruce up the rest of the Club premises after several years of neglect. He also thanked the Minister for Gozo for the advance payment of €10,000 in connection with the €20,000 that the Ministry was contributing towards the works relating to the Ghajnsielem ground project.

Both The Minister for Gozo and Dr. Refalo stressed the important role that the Club was playing in the community as the entity responsible for sports, and noted that the value of sports in terms of physical fitness and long-term health, sense of team work, emotional well-being and psychological development was something that Government and Opposition were in total agreement about. Dr. Refalo praised the committee for focusing on long-term projects and noted that the dream of a turf surface for Ghajnsielem was about to become a reality. The Gozo Minister said that she was pleased that her Ministry was contributing to the advancement of sports in Ghajnsielem.
