Christmas
celebrations
in
Ghajnsielem
started
with
the
traditional
Purcissjoni
tal-Bambin
(Baby
Jesus
procession)
which this
year
started
from
in
front
of
Arka
Foundation's
premises.
Children
and
adults,
together
with
the
St
Joseph
Band,
then
accompanied
the
statue
of
Baby
Jesus
through
to
the
main
square.
The
traditional
procession
was
introduced
by
MUSEUM-founder
Dun
Gorg
Preca
in
1921
in
Hamrun.
Another
Maltese
Christmas
tradition
is
the
Midnight
Mass
where
a
boy
or a
girl,
normally
aged
7 to
10
years
old,
does
the
preaching
of
the
sermon
instead
of
the
priest.
This
is
known
in
Maltese
as
the
‘Priedka
tat-Tifel’
which
means
‘the
preaching
of
the
child’.
The
High
Mass
started
with
the
procession
of
baby
Jesus
accompanied
by
the
popular
hymn
Adeste
Fidelis.
Afterwards,
at
1.30am,
many
decided
to
visit
one
of
the
nearby
clubs
while
the
youths
gathered
in
the
main
clubs
or
Bethlehem
f'Ghajnsielem
to
exchange
greetings
and
enjoying
a
drink
in
the
company
of
friends
and
relatives,
thus
creating
a
unique
atmosphere
for
Christmas.
The
Franciscan
community
at
St
Anthony's
church
also
celebrated
Christmas
even
with
several
activities
which
included
a
small
pageant
re-enhancement
of
the
story
of
baby
Jesus
during
the
midnight
mass.
A
small
festive
get-together
was
also
held
afterwards.
On
Christmas
Day,
many
decided
to
spend
morning
at
the
Clubs
exchanging
greetings
with
their
friends
while
many
others
spent
the
day
at
home
together
with
their
loved
ones
opening
gifts
and
preparing
the
traditional
Christmas
dinner.
