This
morning, Ghajnsielem joined
the rest of the Commonwealth
to mark Remembrance Day to
honour the victims of the
two world wars. Several
family relatives
of the victims
and representatives from
local organizations gathered to pay
tribute to the victims War
Memorial in a short but significant ceremony
organized by the Ghajnsielem
Local Council.
The commemoration started
with a mass at the
Ghajnsielem parish church. Shortly afterwards, Mayor
Francis Cauchi led the
ceremony where wreaths were
placed at the foot of the
War Memorial and followed by
a short prayer by Can. Joe
Cardona.
Special services are held at
war memorials and churches
in numerous countries and in
several villages in Malta
and Gozo on the second
Sunday of November, the
Sunday closest to November
11 marking the signing of
Armistice on the same day of
1918, that signalled the end
of World War I.
The War Monument, which is
situated at Chambray Street,
was inaugurated in May 1995
in honour of the
Ghajnsilmizi who died during
the two World Wars.
