Ghajnsielem remembers war victims
(Sunday, 13th November 2011)

This morning, Ghajnsielem joined the rest of the Commonwealth to mark Remembrance Day to honour the victims of the two world wars. Several family relatives  of the victims and representatives from local organizations gathered to pay tribute to the victims War Memorial in a short but significant ceremony organized by the Ghajnsielem Local Council.

The commemoration started with a mass at the Ghajnsielem parish church. Shortly afterwards, Mayor Francis Cauchi led the ceremony where wreaths were placed at the foot of the War Memorial and followed by a short prayer by Can. Joe Cardona.

Special services are held at war memorials and churches in numerous countries and in several villages in Malta and Gozo on the second Sunday of November, the Sunday closest to November 11 marking the signing of Armistice on the same day of 1918, that signalled the end of World War I.

The War Monument, which is situated at Chambray Street, was inaugurated in May 1995 in honour of the Ghajnsilmizi who died during the two World Wars.
