Go-Kart Racing in Ghajnsielem
(Sunday, 27th December 2009)

The Island Karting Club organized a street race in the main streets of Ghajnsielem including the main square. There were 17 Karts participating in the event including a mix of Junior Max, Senior Max, Formula 30, Super KF and Baby Karts. The event was in aid of ARKA Foundation.  video

 

Christmas Eve celebrations in Ghajnsielem
(Thursday, 24th December 2009)

An ideal weather triggered many Ghajnslemizi to leave their homes on Christmas Eve and enjoy the 'Purcissjoni tal-Bambin' which started from Piazza Tolfa. Another activity was the traditional 'Priedka tal-Milied' at the midnight mass. The nativity village was also open in the early hours of the morning.   more

 

Joe Mifsud launches book, exhibition
(Sunday, 20th December 2009)

Dr. Joe Mifsud presented his new book about Bethlehem during a short presentation at the St Joseph Band Club, Ghajnsielem. The book entitled "Bethlehem: Fil-qtiegh il-qalb it-tama" focuses on his personal experiences as Middle East observer and gives an insight on the current conflicts and affairs.  more

 

Fr. Stephen Magro ordained Deacon
(Saturday, 19th December 2009)

Fr. Stephen Magro OFM was today ordained Deacon at the Franciscan Church at Ghajnielem Gozo by His Excellence, the Bishop of Gozo, Mario Grech. In preparation for this occasion, a prayer vigil was held at the Ghajsielem Parish Church on the night before.  more

 

Gala Dinner for St Joseph Band
(Friday, 18th December 2009)

Over 160 members, bandsmen and guests attended the annual gala dinner organized by the St Joseph Band Club. The event took place inside the Banquet Hall at the Grand Hotel, Ghajnsielem. Guests also won several spot prizes which were donated by the main sponsors of the event.  more

 

Blacks ease past Spurs
(Thursday, 17th December 2009)

Ghajnsielem F.C. progressed to the quarter-final stage of the G.F.A. Cup by beating St. Lawrence Spurs 2-1 at the Sannat Ground this Thursday evening. Alex Spiteri rested several first team regulars and gave valuable playing time to promising youngsters in the squad.  more

 

Blacks frustrate Reds
(Sunday, 13th December 2009)

On occasion, a draw is a beautiful thing. Ghajnsielem F.C.’s 2-2 draw against Victoria Hotspurs is a case in point. The Blacks twice fought back to cancel a Hotspurs lead, the 2nd time with the 90th minute fast approaching. Judging from the jubilation of the fans in attendance and the roar upon the referee’s final whistle this must have felt like a win.  match report

 

Loreto Xuereb awarded 'Gieh Ghajnsielem'

87-year-old Loreto Xuereb was awarded the 15th edition of the 'Premju Gieh Ghajnsielem' for his contribution towards the development of the Ghajnsielem community particularly his voluntary work during the construction of the Ghajnsielem parish church, the feast decorations, Ghajnsielem FC.  ceremony  biography

 

Liturgical Feast of Our Lady of Loreto
(Thursday, 10th December
2009)

Ghajnsielem marked 'Jum Ghajnsielem' with a procession on the eve of the liturgical feast. The St Joseph Band Club accompanied the statue of the Black Madonna around the main streets ending  with a bonfire which was lit in the main square. Gozo Bishop Mgr Mario Grech led the concelebrated Mass.  more

 

Organizations visit the sick and elderly
(Wednesday, 9th December 2009)

The Ghajnsielem Local Council together with representatives of the main organizations continued, once again, their yearly Christmas tradition by visiting the elderly who are either sick or housebound or both. Many took the opportunity to narrate their life experiences while brining back old memories.  more

 

Bethlehem f' Ghajnielem '09 inaugurated
(Sunday, 6th December 2009)

After months of hard work, the dream of several volunteers became a reality on Sunday evening when 'Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem' was inaugurated by the Hon. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi. The atmosphere was again unique with the nativity village full of live animals and actors walking around.  more

 

Brilliant Blacks hit SK Victoria W. for six
(Sunday, 6th December 2009)

Ghajnsielem F.C. started the 2nd round of league play on a good note by beating 3rd S.K. Victoria Wanderers 6-2. The 3 points catapult Ghajnsielem above the Wanderers in the standings on goal-difference. This was yet another eye-brow raising result in what is shaping up to be an unpredictable season.  match report

 

Lantern Cross nearing completion
(Saturday, 5th December 2009)

The restoration of lantern of the dome of the Għajnsielem parish church is nearing completion. The lantern will now be crowned with a wooden cross within the next few days. Almost two metres high and over a metre wide, the teak cross was designed by Innocent Centorino and made by Guzi Mallia.  more

 

Vince Caruana Art Studio open for public

Vince Caruana has announced that he is opening up his art studio in Gozo to the public for the first time, complemented with a totally distinct and diverse collection of artworks. Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem opens on Sunday
(Sunday, 29th November 2009)

This Recently, Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo together with the Hon. Chris Said, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue visited the volunteers at 'Ta Passi' fields as the inauguration is only 1 week away. Over 150 actors and 25 ushers are needed for the animation to run smoothly.  more

 

Samuel Grech in St George's for two years
(Friday, 27th November 2009)

Samuel Grech, 24 and a sixth-year seminarian from Għajnsielem has been assigned for two years of pastoral ministry at St George's parish during weekends. Samuel will be residing together with the Archpriest at the parish house, thus consolidating his pastoral ministry.  more

 

Christmas Gala Dinner by St Joseph Band
(Wednesday, 25th November
2009)

For this festive season, the St Joseph Band is organising a Gala Dinner at the Grand Hotel. Price is €19.50 (Lm8.35) for a 4-course buffet which includes starter, pasta, carvery  chaffers and dessert plus wine and softdrinks. The event will take place on Friday, 18th December at 7.30pm. DJ Joe Cassar will animate the event. Tickets from the Club's Premisis or committee members.

 

Blacks overwhelmed by Tigers
(Sunday, 22nd November
2009)

Ghajnsielem produced their worst performance of the season and where overwhelmed by last-placed Xewkija Tigers 4-2.  Xewkija sealed the points with their fourth before the half-hour. Two goals scored in time added on, one by substitute Stefan Azzopardi and the other by Kenneth Mercieca gave the score a more respectable look.  match report

 

St Andrew's Procession
(Sunday, 15th November 2009)

This evening, the Ghajnsielem Parish celebrated the feast of Saint Andrew with a procession around the main streets of the village. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of fishermen. Andrew, the first Apostle called by Jesus, was a fisherman from Bethsaida and brother of Simon Peter.  more

Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem: 1 month to go!

On Sunday, 'Ta Passi' was again bustling with activity but this time, the volunteers took some time off to relax with their family in the tranquil surroundings. As part of the promotional campaign, the organizers also presented t-shirts to all volunteers. These were sponsored by Arkadia and Ghajnsielem Local Council.  more

 

Meilak earns Blacks a point

With just over a quarter of an hour left in the match, Ghajnsielem looked headed towards defeat at the hands of reigning champions, Sannat Lions but Brian Meilak volleyed the ball hard past Galea for the equalizer. Ghajnsielem F.C. are now third in the table.  match report

 

War Victims Remembered
(Sunday, 8th November 2009)

This morning, Ghajnsielem joined the rest of the Commonwealth to mark Remembrance Day to honour the victims of the two world wars. Several people gathered to pay tribute to the victims War Memorial in a short but significant ceremony was organized by the Ghajnsielem Local Council.  more

 

Mgarr Harbour welcomes MS Prinsendam

The MS Prinsendam cruise ship belonging to Holland America Line,stopped off at Gozo for the day last week after leaving Grand Harbour. The 204 meter cruise ship was carrying 751 passengers plus 450 members of the crew. more

 

Sea tragedy commemorated
(Sunday, 1st November 2009)

Flowers were laid at the foot of a monument in Żewwieqa, Mġarr, in memory of 23 people who lost their lives when their luzzu foundered in rough seas 61 years ago. Only 4 survived. This accident, which is the biggest tragedy since the 2nd World War, occurred on the 30th of October 1948.  more

Ghajnsielem.com is bringing you a photo update of the on-going works at 'Ta Passi' fields as the nativity village is now starting to take a better shape. The area is bustling with activity as several families joined the volunteers at work while their young children took the opportunity to play around the open fields.  more

 

Minister General visits Franciscan fraternity

The Minister General of the Franciscan Minor Order, Father José R. Carballo ofm early this week visited the Franciscan community in Ghajnsielem during a 3-day visit in Malta. The visit was held to commemorate the 800th anniversary from the foundation of the Franciscan Order.  more

 

Blacks outlast Kercem Ajax

If there are half-a-dozen must-win matches for a club in a G.F.A. league schedule, this was one of them as far as Ghajnsielem are concerned. The Blacks needed to beat Kercem to elevate themselves from the lower places in the league standings and to stay among the elite in the first division.  match report

 

Tolfa delegation end visit in Ghajnsielem

A delegation of 27-people from the Italian town of Tolfa made a 5-day visit to Ghajnsielem. The delegation was led by Mayor Alessandro Battilocchio and included members from the musical group 'Amanita di Tolfa' and the 'Gruppo Comunale Voluntri di Protezione Civile di Tolfa'.  more

 

Heartbreak defeat for the Blacks

The Blacks lost 3-4 to Nadur Y. in a see-saw match, with the result uncertain to the end. Each side dominated a half, the half they played with the strong wind blowing in their favour. Unfortunately the Blacks' forwards failed to convert enough of the numerous chances they created in the 2nd half.  match report

 

First weekend of work at 'Ta Passi'

Several volunteers started work on the first structures of the nativity village and after just 2 days, 'Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem' is already starting to take shape. Dozens of children cleaned the surrounding fields  while other volunteers erected two structures which will host the carpenter and blacksmith houses.  more

 

Ambassador visits Ghajnsielem sculptor

His Excellency Bernd Braun has just taken the post as the new Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Malta. Recently, he has organized his first official visit to our island of Gozo, visiting local authorities and other German investment located in our island.  more

Preparations are in full swing as the organizers confirmed the 2nd edition of 'Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem'. Work at 'Ta Passi' starts this Saturday morning. Blacks win eight-goal thriller

Both Ghajnsielem F.C. and Victoria Hotspurs were determined to obtain a victory from this match, but the Blacks had the last say as they managed to beat the opponents in the final stages of the encounter. The 8- goal thriller ended 5-3. Meanwhile Ghajnsielem FC will soon launch a newly designed website.  more

 

Bell project enters a new phase

With the recent visit of Archpriest Fr. Frankie Bajada to the Cornille-Havard bell foundry in France , the bell project for our church entered a new phase. Actually the process of the manufacturing of the bells has started. In the foundry, work on the moulds for bells 6-8 also started last week.  more

 

Ghajnsielem's Paul Stellini exhibits in Tolfa

Emozioni a Colori – Tolfa vista da un artista Maltese” was the title of a personal exhibition of paintings by Paul Stellini exhibited recently in Tolfa. In his paintings, Stellini has depicted Tolfa – the place he has frequently visited over the last period of years, thanks to the twinning which bonds Tolfa and Ghajnsielem.  more

 

IGYC G2-Sagra Famiglia Cup

The 3rd annual yacht races for the G2-Sagra Famiglia Cup, organised by the Imperial Gozo Yacht Club were won by the yacht Chardonnay. The 2nd of two races was held with a start line west to Mgarr, and a course which had the yachts leaving Comino to starboard and then cross the finish line east of Mgarr.  more

 

Miss Gozo '09 announced in Ghajnsielem

Doreen Tabone of Victoria was chosen as Miss Gozo 2009 during an entertainment evening organised by G.M. Productions at the Ghajnsielem Football Club. She will join 19 girls from other localities in Malta who will compete for the Miss Malta title on November the 14th.  more

 

Local artist showcases lenticular art

Remember those rulers that magically changed from one picture to another when you flipped it? That gimmick is called lenticular and is an example of one of the earliest lenticular printing. Ghajnsielem's Vince Caruana saw the potential to use the lenticular medium as a powerful form of expression.  more

 

64th issue of Parish magazine published

Ghajnsielem.com is bringing you some pictures showing several volunteers making the final preparations for the feast. Some were seen cleaning preparing the flower arrangements at the Archparish Church while several volunteers were installing the ground fireworks for tonight. Several children could be spotted pealing the bells at noon while others chose to relax and have a chat at one of the several bars which were open since the early morning.   more

 

Friday: 'Tal-Balzunetta' Band March

The St Joseph Band and Xewkija's 'Prekursur' performed marches from Mgarr Road to Ghajnsielem street and finally ending in the main square. During the band-march, the statue of Our Lady of Home was accompanied by several youths dancing, singing and celebrating in style especially when 'Viva x-Xemx' and 'Ta Gerew' was played.  more

 

Stone works on Church dome completed

Structural works on the dome of the Archparish Church were completed today as a towering crane laid the last stone, a circular globe, on the newly built lantern. The stone was laid among the applause of the Ghajnslemizi who gathered at the Clubs to watch local master mason Leli Saliba (Bufajra) and his son.  more

 

Thursday: Band March from Simirat street
(Thursday, 27th August
2009)

The St Joseph Band together Qala's 'Ite ad Joseph' played marches from Simirat Street passing through Independence Square and ending in front of the club's premises at midnight. The St Joseph Band then marched in the Band Club's premises playing the last march, the 'Viva x-Xemx' at the newly refurbished main hall thus creating a unique festive atmosphere.  more

During the last few days, several volunteers from the St Joseph Band Club distributed over 1000 copies of the 2009 Feast Magazine to all Ghajnsielem households. This year, the publication again offers 150 pages with over 100 articles. Our emigrants can read this publication in PDF format!  more

 

Wednesday: Vigil of prayers creates spiritual atmosphere

In an atmosphere of prayer, joy and peace, the Ghajnsielem Parish organized the Marian vigil of prayers was held in the main square. Fr. Emmanuel Magro together with Archpriest Can Frankie Bajada led this vigil night with the theme being 'Marija, Omm Kristu s-Sacerdot tharisna bhala wliedha'. The Lauretana Choir animated the event.  more

 

Tuesday: A memorable concert

The St. Joseph Band directed by Mro Sunny Galea and assisted by Mro Frankie Debono performed its annual Instrumental Concert in front of over 300 guests at main square. The event started at 9.00pm when a short band march started from the Club's premises. The event was attended by the newly appointed Acting President Dr. Anton Tabone.  more

 

Monday: Titular Statue taken out of its Niche

External celebrations kicked off today when St. Joseph Band played a set of marches from Garden Street. At 10.00pm, the church was packed with people for the traditional 'ħruġ'. The Ghajnselmizi sang and clapped as the huge glass door of the niche was opened and the titular statue was seen emerging forward.  more

 

Open Day at St Joseph Band Club

For the second consecutive year, the St Joseph Band Club opened its doors to the public during an Open Day activity which included a 'Talent & Collections' exhibition, a vintage car display, a band concert plus several dances and musical performances in the evening.  more

 

Pre-feast party at Parish Centre

As the streets decorations are almost finished and the feast is just 8 days away with official celebrations starting tomorrow, the GSM Youths and volunteers from Ghaqda Armar organized a pre-feast party at the parish centre.  more

 

Pre-feast euphoria at 'Fuq il-Ghajn' BBQ

The 'Fuq il-Ghajn' BBQ again managed to be well attended by over 300 including several emgrants during an evening where the food was once again excellent and the atmosphere simply couldn't be better. The pre-feast euphoria and excitement was again visible especially amongst the young ones!  more

 

2009 Feast Magazine is out

Several volunteers from St Joseph Band are currently distributing 2009 Feast Magazine to all Ghajnsielem households. Once again, this publication is again offering a plethora of articles spread over 150 pages. The front cover this year features the 190 years-old titular paint of Our Lady of Loreto found at the Old Parish Church.

 

GhajnsielemFest 2009

The external celebrations for the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto started today with the Ghajnsielem Fest Music festival. Famous Maltese Radio Presenter John Muscat entertained the crowd with his jokes and songs. Many local talents took part in this show with the main attraction of the night being Chiara.  more

 

Fr Anthony Bajada celebrates first mass

Fr Anthony Bajada celebrated his first solemn High Mass of Thanksgiving, or Prima Messa as we know it, at the Ghajnsielem parish church where he is currently carrying his pastoral ministry. Fr Anthony was born on 17th August 1984 and hails from the village of Xaghra.  more

 

Open Day at St Joseph Band Club

The St Joseph Band Club is again opening its doors to the public during an OPEN DAY activity which will be held on Sunday 23rd of August. The Ghajnselmizi will have the opportunity to see the ongoing works on the news halls. Several activities are being planned including exhibitions and talent shows.  more

 

Preparations for the feast gathers pace

With only a few days to go for the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto, the final preparations are in full swing in order to put into effect another spectacular program of cultural and liturgical activities. Several enthusiasts, young and old, can be seen sweating through the street decorations around the main streets.  more

As several volunteers are busy with the street decorations, the official program of activities for the 2009 Feast is currently being distributed to all Ghajnsielem households. Works on Snooker and Main Hall in full swing

Work on the new a Multi-Purpose Hall and a new professional Snooker Hall are in full swing as the executive committee in collaboration with the snooker sub-committee is trying to finish the first phase of this project in time for the Open Day planned for Sunday 23rd August 2009.  more

Ghajnsielem F.C. organized the 2009 Local Football Awards during a Wine and BBQ Night. During this event, 14 players were including the Best Player (Frank Galea), Top Scorer (Joseph Attard), the Most Promising (Joseph Grech) and the Most Dedicated (Frank Buttigieg)  more

 

Vote your favourite song at Radju Lauretana

2009)

Roseann Buttigieg will again be hosting Radju Lauretana's Top Ten Hit List in a bid to find out the greatest hit of all time. t will be up to you, the listeners, that will vote for the songs that will be played during the program. A shortlist of 50 all time great tunes has been made up and the ten songs with most votes will be played during the show, that will be aired every Friday at 12:15pm.  vote now!

 

Preparations for Nativity Village '09 start

Although Christmas is still months away, local organizations and several volunteers enthusiastically packed the Council's Hall to discuss the plans and suggest improvements for 'Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem 09'. Although attention will now focus on the titular feast, work at 'Ta Passi' will start by the end of September.  more

Camping outing for Altar Boys

The Ghajnsielem Parish organized its annual camping for the local altar boys. The 4-day activity was held in Qbajjar, Marsalforn and the children enjoyed themselves with several activities including BBQs, country walks, bumping cars competitions etc. The children also attended a daily mass.  more

 

Radju Lauretana preparations in full swing

Radju Lauretana is already gearing up for the feast schedule that will kick off on 3rd August. With only a month left, preparations are already underway. The website is to be given a fresh new look and the station is also buying its own transmitter. Radju Lauretana is now also on Facebook.  more

 

Holy Confirmation for 26 children

13 girls and 13 boys today received their Holy Confirmation. The sacrament was administered by the Gozo Bishop. Those who received the Confirmation participated in the Liturgy. Confirmation is a sacrament in which the Holy Ghost is given to the baptized in order to make them strong Christians soldiers.  more

 

St Joseph Band proudly performs in Sicily

The applause, honour and praise where showered on the St Joseph Band as it proudly represented Ghajnsielem during a 4-Day trip in Sicily for the feast of St Paul in Palazzolo Acreide. Such were the comments of the 'Liberta' newspaper of Siracusa which featured a full page article related with this trip.  more

 

Old parish church consecration anniversary

The Ghajnsielem community gathered at the Old Parish Church to celebrate the anniversary of the consecration of the church which started to be built during the 19th century,  when the people of Ghajnsielem were finding it difficult to up to the Nadur parish church to hear mass and carry out their religious duties.  more

 

Fr. Joe Cardona becomes a Canon

Fr. Joe Cardona, Vicar of the Ghajnsielem Parish, has been conferred the title of Canon of the Basilica of St. Peter & St. Paul, Nadur. This title was bestowed by H.L. Mgr. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo during a religious function. His first public appearance vested in new uniform was during the solemn procession.  more

 

Crime rate in Ghajnsielem among lowest

Statistical information obtained by Ghajnsielem.com show that  crime in Ghajnsielem is among the lowest in Malta and Gozo. Crime has gone down by 25 per cent in four years, according to data. In fact the number of crime reports dropped to 79 in 2008 from 108 in 2005. Checkout the full statistics.   more

 

63rd issue of Parish magazine published

Rare Bronze statuette on display

A bronze statuette discovered in Ghajnsielem in 1771 is currently on show at the Exhibition Hall of Heritage Malta's Area Office at the Cittadella, Victoria, Gozo. This statuette is being exhibited for the first time in Gozo since its discovery two hundred and thirty eight years ago.  more

 

Solemnity of Corpus Christi

Today Ghajnsielem celebrated the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, traditionally known as the feast of Corpus Christi. The 23 children who recently received the First Holy Communion took part in a short procession with the Blessed Sacrament around the main streets of Ghajnsielem.  more

 

Modified Car Show Festival

The 2009 Gozo Auto Festival was held today at the Gozo Heliport grounds were dozens of Maltese and Gozitan modified cars, bikes and trucks were exhibited for the joy of all those present. Several motor clubs took part in this event.  more

 

Liturgical Feast of St Anthony

This weekend, the Franciscan Fraternity is celebrating the Liturgical Feast of St Anthony, thus closing the official feast celebrations dedicated to this Saint. The church was impressively decorated for the occasion with activities starting on Friday morning and ending the following day.  more

 

St Joseph Band unveils new projects

Ghajnsielem F.C. holds AGM

The Ghajnsielem Football Club held it's Annual General Meeting. Club officials gave detailed summary of the club's administration and financial affairs. Two important amendments to the Club's Statute were also effected. The outgoing committee was re-elected by the present members.  more

 

Gozo Heritage closes down

Seven thousand years of living history have been lost to the public as the Gozo Heritage museum in Ghajnsielem was forced to close its doors last week, with one former senior employee citing the inability of independent Gozitan attractions to compete with the low rates that Heritage Malta offers tour operators.  more

 

Cardinal Majella visits Ghajnsielem

Cardinal Agnelo Gerardo Majella, Primate of Brazil who presided over the festivities marking the feast of St Paul in Munxar last week, visited Ghajnsielem. In a short but very symbolic ceremony, he inaugurated a course of catechises on the Beatitudes.  more

Work on church model in advanced stage

Works on the replica model of the Old Parish Church are in advanced stage as Archpriest Emeritus Mons. Joseph Zerafa is aiming to finish this model by August of this year so that it will be available for display during the feast week. The next model in the pipeline is the Lourdes Chapel.  more

 

First Holy Communion for 23 children

It was a special day for 23 girls and boys as they received their First Holy Communion last Sunday afternoon. They left the Old Parish church at 4.45pm and walked to the Ghajnsielem parish together. A mass was then concelebrated by Archpriest Can Frankie Bajada.  more

 

Church dome restoration well underway

Structural intervention works on the lantern of the dome of the Ghajnsielem Archparish Church are well underway. The restoration is taking place after cracks started to develop on the upper part, leading to water leakage problems. Work is being carried out by local master mason Leli Saliba. The lantern will be rebuilt in the upcoming days.  more

 

Primary school organizes cultural activity

The Ghajnsielem Primary school held a musical and cultural activity. The event was well attended by the parents who were keen to see their children taking part in the show. The event was led by Headmistress Ms. Pauline Grech. The event also included a party and bingo.  more

 

Join the St Joseph Band in Sicily trip

The Executive Committee today announced the details of a 4-Day trip in Sicily between the 28th of June and 1st of July 2009 for those who want to accompany the St Joseph Band. The band has been invited by UNESCO to take part in the feast of St Paul at Palazzolo Acreide in Siracusa. The price is €290 (Lm125).  more

 

St Anthony's Feast preparations underway

With only a few days to go, several youths are working around the clock in order to finish the street decorations of 'Tal-Gudja' area in time for the Feast of St Anthony which this year will take place on the 31st of May, opening the local feast season. Feast of St Joseph celebrated

The Ghajnsielem parish celebrated the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, better known in Maltese as 'San Guzepp Haddiem'. An orchestra, with the participation of Lauretana Choir accompanied the High Mass  which started at 5.00pm. The St Joseph band then accompanied the procession around the main streets.  more

 

Blacks' season is over

Ghajnsielem F.C. lost 0-2 to Victoria Hotspurs in the first semi-final of the G.F.A. Cup competition. It is the first time since 96/97 that the Blacks have not featured in a major cup final and the first time since 03/04 that Ghajnsielem have not made it to the final.  report

 

St Joseph Band invited to play in Sicily

The St Joseph Band  has been invited by a UNESCO representative to take part in the feast of St Paul at Palazzolo Acreide, Siracusa in Scicily. This traditional and popular feast is celebrated between the June 27 to 29 in a very magnificent and unique way. Their patron is St. Paul.  more

Thanksgiving Mass for Dun Karm

The  Ghajnsielem Parish Church today concelebrated a thanksgiving mass in honour of Dun Karm Cassar who recently celebrated the sixtieth anniversary from his priesthood ordination. After the mass, several members of the congregation walked up the main aisle and one by one expressed their best wishes.  more

 

Yacht Club opens Mgarr Photo Exhibition

U/17 Heartbreak: Decider next for Blacks

Ghajnsielem's Under/17s were moments away from being crowned champions of their category, when Nadur shocked them with a breakaway goal, to win the final match of the championship pool 1-0 and thus force a decider. Mons. Zerafa working on another model

Joseph Zerafa is working on yet another replica model of an Ghajnsielem landmark... this time the historic Old Parish Church. Blacks book place in GFA Cup semi-finals

Sannat Lions have been crowned 1st division champions  in the last match of the league season. The Blacks were the runners-up in the title race  after an interesting seven-game winning streak late in the season. Meanwhile, Ghajnsielem F.C. beat Qala St. Joseph 2-1 in a quarter-final tie for the G.F.A. Cup.  more

Ghajnsielem started this match well and led Victoria Hotspurs through a 14th minute Joseph Attard goal. However, the Blacks were heavily defeated by the Reds who scored four goals. Dun Karm celebrates his 60th ordination anniversary

Dun Karm Cassar is today celebrating his sixtieth anniversary of his ordination. Dedicated his entire life to his native village, Dun Karm Cassar was heavily involved in many areas which shaped Ghajnsielem in the 20th century including the Ghajnsielem Parish, St Joseph Band, Ghajnsielem Football Club, the Catholic Action Youth Center, Krucjata Ewkaristika and Circolo Virgo Lauretana. GFA Cup: Ghajnsielem beat Xewkija 2-1

Ghajnsielem secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Sannat Lions with a Joseph Buttigieg goal two minutes into injury time. After this dramatic win Ghajnsielem find themselves level on points with Sannat. The Blacks will take on Victoria Hotspurs in their next league match, and Sannat Lions will close the season with a clash against S.K. Victoria Wanderers. Contract for the three bigger bells signed

Archpriest Fr. Frankie Bajada signed the contract for the three bigger bells from the set of eight which will crown the bell tower of our church. The contract was signed at the Cornille-Havard foundry in Villedieu les Poelles in Normandy, France, a city which very interestingly was founded by the Knights of Malta.  more

Ghajnsielem beat S.K. Victoria W. 4-0. This was an all important match, but all minor skirmishes compared to the battles that loom ahead. So the referee's final whistle signalled the end of the phoney war, and the first drumbeats of the real war.  more

 

Devotees celebrate Our Lady of Sorrow

Hundreds followed the solemn procession of Our Lady of Sorrow which went round the main streets of the village. The procession took the form of a pageant with various participants dressed up in period costumes to represent Biblical personalities. The St Joseph Band accompanied the procession with funeral marches.  more

Ghajnsielem F.C. held a rally for the members, players and supporters as the team gears up for the final three matches of the season. The blacks are the main contenders to Sannat Lions for the title. 2009 Holy Week activities announced

Several activities starting as early as next week have been announced to mark the Holy Week. These include re-enactments a devotional procession and several other spiritual activities. On Palm Sunday, the St Joseph Band will also inaugurate an artistic Holy Week Exhibition which will remain open until Easter.   more

 

Relentless Blacks

Ghajnsielem F.C. were in no mood to drop any points in their relentless pursuit of leaders Sannat Lions. They dismissed a Qala side with three first half goals. The Blacks are now joint league leaders equal on points but all eyes are now on Sannat's rescheduled match against Nadur Youngsters this Tuesday.  more

 

Restoration on St. Cecilia Chapel starts

After a decade of controversy and appeals from several NGO's, restoration works on the medieval Chapel of St. Cecilia has finally started. Partly dilapidated but still in its original form it is considered one of the best surviving examples of the un-aisled chapels that were once common in the Maltese Islands.  more

Spray Painting Exhibition at Ghajnsielem

Players, supporters rally for title finale

As the title race starts entering into its hottest stages, the Ghajnsielem F.C. committee organized a fund-raising event at the Club's premises. During the event which was well attended by the players and supporters, a sponsor was donated to the Club. Meanwhile the Blacks will be back in action next Sunday.  more

 

Radju Lauretana prepares for Easter

Ghajnsielem F.C. kept up their challenge for league honours with a fine 2-0 win over Nadur Youngsters. Brian Meilak and Joseph Attard scored the goals in this hard fought match. The win meant that the Blacks kept pace with front runners Sannat Lions and second-placed S.K. Victoria Wanderers.  more

 

Seminarist Samuel Grech made Lector

It was a special day for Samuel Grech who together with four other seminarians received the ministry of Lectorate at a special concelebrating presided by H.L. Mgr Mario Grech. The ceremony took place at the collegiate parish church of Nadur. They are now in their fifth year of formation at the Gozo seminary.  more

Ghajnsielem F.C. moved up to third place at the end of two rounds of league play with a fine 4-3 win over Kercem Ajax. Alex Viana, who had missed a penalty early in the match, scored twice and Joseph Attard added two more for the Blacks. The Blacks are now just two points away from second place S. K. Carnival in Ghajnsielem Primary School

For the second year running, the Ghajnsielem Primary School organized a colourful mix of dances, songs and custom competitions for the children. Although the show was held in the main hall due to the cold weather, the activity was well attended by the parents and several Ghajnslemizi.  more

 

'L-Akbar Sigriet' staged at Parish Centre

The Ghajnsielem Drama Group staged 'L-Akbar Sigriet' written by Lino Grech to a full house at Lauretana Parish Centre both on Monday (eve of a Public Holiday) and today. The three-act play was directed by Anthony Buttigieg. The play centred around a priest and the secret of Confession.  more

Picnic at Ta Passi: A taste of things to come

After spending the whole morning dismantling the last remaining structures at 'Ta Passi' fields, dozens of volunteers organized a picnic together with their families in the open fields. Mayor Francis Cauchi said that the Local Council will soon submit an application to turn 'Ta Passi' fields into a permanent recreational park.  more

 

Blacks' comeback stuns Reds

Ghajnsielem F.C. put their recent disappointments behind them and fought back from two goals down to defeat Victoria Hotspurs 3-2. Alex Viana, with two goals, and Charles Mercieca scored for Ghajnsielem. The blacks are now standing third in the classification.  more

 

Nativity Village structures being dismantled

After almost four weeks of strong winds and heavy rain, the 'Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem' organizers started to dismantle the wooden structures at 'Ta Passi' fields. The Ghajnsielem Local Council is providing a large warehouse to store these structures. The volunteers will be meeting again on Tuesday.  more

 

Saliba family awarded Qalb tad-Deheb

Family Saliba from Ghajnsielem was recently awarded the 'Familja Qalb tad-Deheb', sponsored by the Gozo Cana Movement. The award was presented by President Eddie Fenech Adami during an evening held at Hotel Ta' Ċenċ. Mayor Francis Cauchi also presented a commemorative gift to the family.  more

The Musical Archive and the Refurbishment of the Committee room will be high on the agenda as the St Joseph Band Club holds its annual AGM on Friday 13th February at 6.30pm. After electing the new committee for 2009/10, a series of initiatives to finance the costs of these projects will be unveiled. All members are urged to attend.

 

Blacks hope fade after heavy defect

Ghajnsielem F.C. started the match well but then faded to their second defeat of the season. Both these defeats were heavy and both were suffered at the hand of the league leaders, Sannat Lions. With the win, Sannat soared three points clear of pursuers S.K. Victoria W. at the top of the first division table.  more

 

Mons. Zerafa completes spring model

Archpriest Emeritus Mons. Joseph Zerafa completed the final touches on yet another replica model of an Ghajnsielem landmark... this time the "Ghajn tal-Hasselin".  The famous spring literally used to be the central meeting point of the first people that formed the Ghajnsielem community as we know it today.  more

 

Dun Karm Cassar donates set of gothic candleholders

A new set of 10 French Gothic style candleholders, were recently displayed for the first time in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament of the Ghajnsielem Parish Church to compliment the Holy Eucharist Tabernacle, also in gothic design. These candleholders were donated by Rev. Fr. Karm Cassar.  more

 

Blacks register another draw

Ghajnsielem F.C. drew 1-1 in their 2nd round match against S.K. Victoria W. The draw was of little use to the two combatants, and suited Sannat Lions the most. Earlier in the afternoon, the Lions beat Nadur Youngsters 2-0 and stretched their lead over the Wanderers to 3 points.  more

 

Get-Together for volunteers and actors

The organizers of 'Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem' organized a get-together for all volunteers, helpers and actors who gave a helping hand in making the nativity village at 'Ta Passi' a success. Over 300 volunteers were present for the event which was sponsored by the management of the Grand Hotel.  more

 

Christmas schedule comes to an end

Radju Lauretana's has just ended its transmission as the Christmas schedule comes to an end. But broadcasting will resume on 29th March for the Easter. The Christmas Schedule included exclusive transmissions from Loreto, the Ursoline Sisters Crèche in Sliema and from the live crib at Ta Passi.  more

 

Ghajnsielem F.C. holds annual dinner

Over 100 people crowded 'Ta Cenc Hotel' for the annual Gala Dinner organized by Ghajnsielem F.C. for all tis players and supporters. During a short speech for the occasion, Club President Sammy Rapa honoured of all the present and past footballers who wore the Black and White strip.  more

 

Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem comes to an end

All good things come to an end... and this was indeed the case at 'Ta Passi' fields after 4 weeks of animation and 3 months of voluntary work. Sunburst donated to Franciscan Fraternity

The Franciscan community celebrated the Epiphany with a Holy Mass led by P. Joseph Magro ofm. During the offertory, the Franciscan Fraternity was presented with a Silver Sunburst, the work of silversmith George Farrugia. The Sunburst was donated by his family and will be placed behind Baby Jesus's head.  more

 

Day trip in Malta for young students

The Ghajnsielem Parish organized a trip to Malta for the students who attended the Christmas Novena last year. The group departed with the 7.30am ferry boat and visited Valletta, Sliema and Baystreet. The trip included a visit to the Ursoline sisters where the students learned about their community life and work.  more

 

Radio marathon collects €2110 in 12 hours

The doors at Radju Lauretana were again open for the general public to view the studio and greet of the ratio station crew. Once again all visitors were very generous with their donations and over €2110 in just one afternoon. Meanwhile it has been unveiled that the radio will broadcast the feast of St. Anthony this June.  more

 

NYE celebrations at St Joseph Band Club
