Christmas Celebrations in Ghajnsielem

Christmas celebrations in Ghajnsielem started with the traditional Purcissjoni tal-Bambin which this year started from Arka foundation's premises. Hundreds of parishioners also attended the midnight mass while afterwards many exchanged greetings with a drink in one of the local clubs or in Bethlehem more

 

'Clubhouse' inaugurated at Ghajnsielem FC

The Ghajnsielem Football Club celebrated its 75th anniversary with the opening of 'The Clubhouse' bar and restaurant. The Azzopardi family, the new operator redesigned the bar area to create a stunning, modern ambiance which they are sure will be a big hit with the Club’s members and their guests.  more

 

Bethlehem f'Ghajnsielem 2011 inaugurated

After months of hard work, the 4th edition of Bethlehem f'Ghajnsielem was officially inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Tonio Borg. The nativity village will remain open until Sunday 8th of January and will be animated by over 150 actors for another unique experience not worth missing.  more

 

Joe Rapa awarded 'Ġieħ Għajnsielem'

Loredana Agius to participate in Romania

After winning the 'Trixie International Art Festival' in Bulgaria last August, Loredana was again invited by the Director of the 'Carpathian Star Festival' to participate in this festival next December in Romania. This is a prestigious festival with participants coming from various countries around the world.  more

 

Ghajnsielem remembers war victims

Ghajnsielem joined the rest of the Commonwealth to mark Remembrance Day to honour the victims of the two world wars. Family relatives  and local NGO representatives gathered to pay tribute to the victims War Memorial in a short but significant ceremony organized by the Ghajnsielem Local Council.  more

Debattista wins 'Rugby Player of the Year'

Rugby league player Clifford Debattista from Ghajnsielem has won the Ray Morris Medal after being named Maltese Rugby League Player of the Year in London. The Malta vice-captain’s nomination was announced as the Rugby League International Federation convened for its annual awards.  more

The Franciscan community together with the rest of the Catholic world recently celebrated the feast of St Francis of Assisi with several external and internal activities. But highlight of the celebrations took place on Sunday morning with the blessing of the pets and horses.  more

 

Construction at Ta' Passi fields in full swing

Several structures have already been erected on the site which will host the fourth edition of Bethlehem f'Ghajnsielem. Construction started just two weeks ago but thanks to the enthusiasm of the locals including several volunteers who are giving a helping hand on a daily basis, work is progressing well on schedule. more

 

Work on Bethlehem f'Ghajnsielem 11 starts

With Christmas just two months away, volunteers enthusiastically started construction works on the 4th edition of the nativity village, Bethlehem f'Ghajnsielem. The live crib which is expected to be inaugurated on the 2nd week of December promises to built the three successful past editions in order to offer once again a unique experience of the timeless story of Nativity.  more

 

AFM Patrol boats on display in Mgarr

The Maritime Squadrom of the Armed Forces of Malta this morning berthed two patrol boats in Mgarr Harbour during open day in Gozo. Stands featuring weapons and equipment displays, as well as information on the units represented and their respective roles and duties in the AFM were set up.  more

 

Liturgical Feast of St Francis

The liturgical feast of Saint Francis of Assisi is celebrated annually on the 4th of October. However, the Franciscan community of Ghajnsielem will be celebrating this event two weeks later with 5 days of activities aimed to all ages. The highlight of the celebrations will be the blessing of the animals.  more

 

Locals contribute towards a better future

The Ghajnslemizi came out in numbers to visit the interactive exhibition and workshop as part of the study into preparation of the Ghajnsielem Sustainable Locality Action Plan. The event was organised on behalf of Ghajnsielem Local Council and was the culmination of a month long public consultation. more

 

Several new attractions at kids fair

The Ghajnsielem Local Council together with Buzzy Kids Entertainment  organized the second edition of the 'Kids Fun Fair', a family event with a massive choice of activities! Loredana Agius wins international song festival

Eight years Loredana Agius of Ghajnsielem won the Trixie International Art Festival in Bulgaria with the original song ‘Sorpresa’ penned by Christopher Azzopardi and composed by Kaya (Priscilla Psaila). Action Plan for Ghajnsielem being prepared
(Friday, 26th August 2011)

The Ghajnsielem Local Council is preparing on a Sustainable Locality Action Plan for Ghajnsielem.  In summary,  the Action Plan will define a vision for Ghajnsielem in 10 years time (2020), as well as a set of short-term actions to help achieve that vision. A public meeting is planned for 15th September.  more

 

Poor Clares's sister arrival in Gozo marked

Gozo Bishop Mgr. Mario Grech presided a con-celebration at the Franciscan Church of St. Anthony to mark the beginning of the Poor Clare sister's presence in Gozo. The ceremony started the day before with a night of vigil prayers and the inauguration of their new monastery in Victoria.  more

What a great start for festa week this year! Indeed it was a very special day for our community as novel priest Fr Samuel Grech celebrated his First Solemn High Mass of Thanksgiving. After 46 years our parish has a new priest, and today's jubilation was truly appropriate.  more

As the streets decorations are almost finished and the feast is just a few days away with official celebrations starting tomorrow, several volunteers and youths from Ghaqda Armar and the Ghaqda tan-Nar organized a pre-feast party at the St Joseph Band disco area.

Another successful BBQ at 'Fuq il-Ghajn'

What has now became an eagerly anticipated annual event, this year's edition of the 'BBQ ta' fuq il-Ghajn' was once again well attended. The atmosphere was once again unique with excellent food with live entertainment provided by the local band 'Mistaken Identity'.  more

 

Freddie Portelli entertains the crowd

The crowd truly enjoyed a live performance by Freddie Portelli, one of the most well-known singers in the Maltese music scene for the last 40. He entertained the crowd with a two hour live show during a fundraising dinner jointly organized in the Ghajnsielem carpark.  more

 

Blessing of the bells ceremony
(Sunday, 14th August 2011)

The festive celebrations in Ghajnsielem continued today with the blessing of the new bells. Activities started at 9am with a Concelebrated Mass ‘In Fractione Panis’ led by Gozo Bishop Mgr Mario Grech. The titular statue was than taken out of its niche. Celebrations continued in the main square with the ceremony of the blessing of the bells.  more

 

Eight Bells arrive in Ghajnsielem

The new bells which are set to dominate the towering belfry of the Ghajnsielem Parish Church arrived today after a long trip from Cornille-Havard bell foundry in Normandy, France. Hunderds of parishioners including  a large group of youths all dressed in the same gear gathered in Mgarr harbour to welcome this long-awaited project.  more

 

Ghajnsielem delegation in Bethlehem

The Bethlehem f’Ghajnsielem event which is now entering in its 4th edition led to a start of a close relationship between the community of Ghajnsielem and Bethlehem. A delegation from the Ghajnsielem Local Council recently visited Palestine and is planning to improve such relations by organizing a tour early next year.  more

 

Zewwieqa promenade to cost €5m

The Gozo ministry has launched works on the development of a new promenade at Iz-Zewwieqa in Mgarr harbour. The €5m project will include an extensive paved promenade with space reserved for Gozo's only surviving dgħajsa tal-Latini as well as new parking facilities and street furniture. more

Visit marks completion of the eight bells

A delegation from the Ghajnsielem Parish recently visited the Cornille-Havard foundry to receive the 8 bells for our church. The Archpriest marked each bell with a cross as a sign of acceptance in the evening of 14th July after a final ringing of the bells in front of the entire delegation.  more

 

New frequency for Radju Lauretana

The summer schedule which includes the Feast of Our Lady of Loretu starts on the 1st of August. The transmission will include live coverage of  the arrival and blessing of the new bells and the Prima Messa of Fr. Samuel Grech. The station will also be broadcasting from a new frequency... 89.3FM.  more

 

Larger library for School of Arts

The library at the Wistin Camilleri Gozo Centre for Arts and Crafts, in Ghajnsielem has in recent weeks received several donations of books, from among others, the Vatican Library and the American Embassy in Malta. Due to this welcome increase in books, the existing library has transferred to a larger area.  more

 

Holy Confirmation for 25 children
(Sunday, 3rd July 2011)

10 girls and 15 boys today received their Holy Confirmation. The sacrament was administered by Gozo Bishop Mons Mario Grech. Confirmation is a sacrament in which the Holy Ghost is given to those already baptized in order to make them strong and perfect Christians and soldiers of Jesus Christ.  more

 

Local Council issues statement on new bus routes

The Ghajnsielem Local Council has issued a statement showing its disapproval on the omission of the village centre from the new routes. Arriva takes over the bus service in Malta and Gozo on July 3rd. This route was particularly popular with locals who could board a bus from the main square to Victoria.  Press Release

 

More streets resurfaced by the local council

Amongst the major works performed by the Ghajnsielem Local Council through the past years, road resurfacing was always high on the agenda. Recently three streets were resurfaced with hot asphalt including Lourdes street, part of Our Lady of Loreto Square (leading to Ghajnsielem Street) and part of Garden Street.  more

The nice weather and sizable crowd ensured an enjoyable evening as the Franciscan community celebrated the feast of St Anthony. The St Joseph band took an active part on both Saturday and feast day  by accompanying the statue of St Anthony along the streets of 'Tal-Gudja' community.  more

 

Ghajnsielem group in E.U. cultural trip

A group from Ghajnsielem led by Mayor Francis Cauchi was recently invited from the Erchie Local Council, a small town from the Province of Brindisi in Italy, to participate in a European Union programme called ‘Religious Tourism’ which aims at exchanging cultural traditions between small provincial towns.  more

The Ghajnsielem Local Council together with the Council of Tolfa recently  organized a joint workshop between Tula Police Force and Maltese Police Force. The seminar was held at the Grand Hotel Ghajnsielem and was inaugurated by Hon. Dr. Chris Said.  more

 

First Holy Communion for 15 children

It was a special day for 15 girls and boys as they received their First Holy Communion last Sunday afternoon. They left the Old Parish church at 4.45pm and walked to the Ghajnsielem parish together. A mass was then concelebrated by Archpriest Can Frankie Bajada.  more

This morning, the Ghajnslemizi flocked the Ghajnsielem parish church to witness Fr Samuel Grech deliver his first mass together with Archpriest Can. Frankie Bajada. Fra Stephen celebrates 'Prima Messa' at St Anthony's Church

Just a week before celebrating the feast of St. Anthony, the Franciscan community in Ghajnsielem this morning celebrated the 'Prima Messa' of Fra Stephen Magro ofm. Several dignitaries were present for the high mass which ended with a reception. It was early morning on Sunday when Fr Stephen cut the cake and a great occasion came to a happy ending.  more

Presbiteral Ordination of Fr. Samuel Grech

Ghajnsielem has been waiting for this day for almost 46 years. This evening, one of its children has been ordained priest by Bishop Mario Grech at the Gozo Cathedral. Fr Samuel Grech is the first priest from our parish in 46 years, the last being Archpriest Mons G. Zerafa who was ordained priest in 1965.  more

 

Tree planting near Fort Chambray
(Wednesday, 25th May 2011)

HSBC’s Gozo staff and their families planted the last trees needed to complete an area of 11,000 sq metres designated for afforestation at the site known as 'Taħt Chambray' resulting in the planting of 2,300 new trees and shrubs. The Mgarr Harbour Grove will now cover 45,000 sq metres of land in this area.  more

 

Feast of St Joseph celebrated

The Ghajnsielem parish celebrated the feast of St. Joseph. A mass was held at 5.00pm with several bandsmen and committee members from St Joseph Band taking an active part in the celebration. The band than accompanied the statue of its patron saint around the main streets of Ghajnsielem.  more

 

Farewell mass to Guardian Fr J. Magro

Fr Guardian Joseph Magro, OFM celebrated his last special Sunday Mass for youths at St Anthony church, as he will be taking up a new post at the Order’s media office in Rome. The Franciscan community organised a small farewell party on the church parvis.  more

 

Main bell casting successfully completed

A small delegation from Ghajnsielem led by Archpriest Bajada witnessed the historic moment when the final bell was casted at the Cornille-Havard foundry in Normandy, France. The pristine bells now soon be shipped for delivery in order to arrive in time for the feast of Our Lady of Loreto this August.  more

Children celebrate Mothers Day

In celebration of mothers' day, young children from the Ghajnsielem Primary School organized a musical event this Sunday at the Ghajnsielem parish centre. The performances which also included animations and short plays encouraged children to say "thank you" to their parents and loved ones.  more

 

Mikiel Ciangura, 93, passes away

It was the end of an era for St. Joseph Band as Mikiel Ciangura, the last member of the first band that Mons Joseph De Piro formed back in 1928, passed away early this morning at the age of 93. He was awarded the 'Gieh Ghajnsielem' award just two years ago for his contribution to the Ghajnsielem community.  biography

 

Stellini made an honorary citizen of Tolfa
(Monday, 2nd May 2011)

Local artist Paul Stellini was made an honorary citizen of the Italian town of Tolfa to seal the ten year anniversary of the twinning between Tolfa and Ghajnsielem and also the personal friendship which exists between the people of Tolfa lead by the Mayor Alessandro Battilocchio.  more

 

Blacks eliminated from GFA Cup

Ghajnsielem F.C. are out from the GFA Cup after a disappointing 0-4 result against Sannat Lions. This result which ends the 2010/11 season was harsh on the Blacks who were punished seemingly on every mistake they made. Easter egg hunt in Ghajnsielem

Two thousand eggs were up for grabs during an Easter egg hunt for children held in Ghajnsielem last Sunday. Organised by Buzzy Kids Entertainment, in collaboration with Ghajnsielem council, the event included bouncy castles, face painting, an imagination station, photo creations, a paint station and football.  more

Ghajnsielem F.C. in GFA Cup semi-final
(Saturday, 23rd April 2011)

Ghajnsielem F.C. beat Kercem Ajax 3-0 to move into the semi-finals of the G.F.A. Cup against Sannat Lions next Saturday. Thiago dos Santos scored a goal in each half. This G.F.A. Cup provided  another opportunity to give some of the young players in the squad a chance to prove their worth to the side.  match report

Ghajnsielem F.C. beat champions Sannat Lions 1-0 in the last match of the league season. Thiago dos Santos scored the goal which brought the Blacks to within three points of Sannat. The Blacks were eager to win the match purely out of pride as they wanted to finish a close second to Sannat.  match report

Ghajnsielem F.C.'s Under/14 team became Champions of the  u/14 category in a match against Oratory Youths who led the league standings since the start of the season. A 1-1 draw was enough for the Ghajnsielem youths to keep Oratory in second place, one point behind the Blacks.  more

 

Devotees celebrate Our Lady of Sorrow

Although several the processions and pilgrimages had to be cancelled due to the bad weather, the deep veneration towards Our Lady of Sorrows was still visible as hundreds flocked the Ghajnsielem parish church for a holy mass dedicated for one of the most revered feasts in the Maltese islands.  more

In collaboration with the Ghajnsielem Local Council, Ghaqda Drammatika Ghajnsielem will be presenting the play 'The Son of Man' (Bin il-Bniedem). The passion play will be staged in the open air at Independence Square this Saturday 9th April at 8pm promising a unique experience to all the present viewers.  more

Ghajnsielem F.C. lost to Nadur Youngsters 1-2. Thiago dos Santos scored the Blacks' goal from a first half penalty. Earlier in the afternoon Sannat Lions beat St. Laurence Spurs 2-0. This means that the Lions will win the championship if they avoid defeat in their next league match against Nadur.  match report

Carnival at Ghajnsielem Primary School

Works on Zewwieqa Waterfront start

Work on the 'Zewwieqa Waterfront' started last week, thus finally rehabilitating the area known as Taz-Zewwieqa into a waterfront area by creating pedestrian zones, landscaped plazas including seating area with open sea views, an area hosting the restored Dghajsa tal-Latini and an informal stage structure.  more

 

Ghajnsielem signs twinning with Bethlehem

The Municipality of Bethlehem and the Ghajnsielem Local Council have signed an agreement of cooperation which aims to establish cultural, educational and economical ties between the two towns. The twinning agreement was signed this morning by Mayor Francis Cauchi and Bethlehem Mayor Dr. Victor Batarseh.  more

Ghajnsielem unite to honour Mgr G. Zerafa

The funeral of 72-year old Monsignor Joseph (Ġużeppi) Zerafa, the second Archpriest and tenth parish-priest of the Ghajnsielem Parish was held today in a most solemn manner honoured by the presence of a huge congregation who filled his beloved church with the Ghajnslemizi packing the doorways and spilling onto the church parvismore

 

Archpriest Emeritus Mgr Giuseppi Zerafa passes away

Ta' Passi to be turned into a family park

Following the huge success of the three editions of the Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem event, the Ghajnsielem local council hopes that 'Ta Passi' fields can remain a favourite public spot all year round by creating a leisure park.
