Paul
Stellini in London
(Thursday,
19th
September 2002)
Paul
A. Stellini - Homage to an island home: Gozo
is the title of a painting exhibition that Paul A.
Stellini is holding at Westminster
Hall, Westminster Abbey in London. Its is part of the
Malta Day celebrations being organized by the Malta High
Commission in London in September 2002. It’s the first time
that the artist will be exhibiting in London and the 4th
personal exhibition overseas.
The
exhibition is supported by The Malta Tourism Authority, Bank
of Valletta, Ghajnsielem Local Council and the Ministry for
Gozo.
Art
Critic by Joe Scicluna: The artist’s homeland, the
small Mediterranean island of Gozo, is currently undergoing a
metamorphic period in its history. The ‘traditional Gozo’
which seemed to defy time and development is rapidly vanishing
before Stellini’s eyes. He has risen to the challenge of
focusing his own particular vision on landscapes, urban and
rural, as well as the traditional religious culture which
symbolizes for the artist the bedrock of the island’s
millennial past. His poetic vision of Gozo’s past and
ephemeral present marks his works as an elegiac tribute to the
culture in which he was raised and nurtured him and of which
he is still proud to form a part.
Biography:
Paul A. Stellini was born in Sydney, Australia, but at the age
of four he returned with his parents to their native island
Gozo. After studying under the private tuition of artist Paul
Camilleri Cauchi, Stellini followed a course in graphic design
under the tuition of Maltese artist Anthony Calleja. He also
holds a diploma in Commercial Art and Interior Design. Today
Paul A. Stellini teaches graphical communications at the Aguis
de Soldanis Girls’ Juniour Lyceum and art at the Wistin
Camilleri of Fine Arts .
Besides
participating in various collective exhibitions, Paul A.
Stellini regularly organizes personal exhibitions in Gozo and
Malta. His works are to be found in private collections both
locally and abroad, besides numerous designs for monuments,
street and squares’ embellishments as well as stage designs
in Gozitan localities. He proudly notes that among his patrons
there is England’s soccer star Michael Owen as well as
former Liverpool FC stalwarts Phil Neal and David Fairclough
and the American actor Gabriel Byrnes
