St Joseph Band proudly performs
in Sicily

The applause, honour and praise where showered on the St
Joseph Band as it proudly represented Ghajnsielem during a
4-Day trip in Sicily for the feast of St Paul in Palazzolo
Acreide. Such were the comments of the 'Liberta' newspaper
of Siracusa which featured a full page article related with
this trip.

Old parish church consecration
anniversary

The Ghajnsielem community gathered at the Old Parish Church
to celebrate the anniversary of the consecration of the
church which started to be built during the
19th century, when the
people of Ghajnsielem were finding it difficult to
up to the Nadur parish church to hear mass and carry out
their religious duties.

Fr. Joe Cardona becomes a Canon
(Sunday, 28th June
2009)
Fr. Joe Cardona, Vicar of the Ghajnsielem Parish, has been
conferred the title of Canon of the Basilica of St. Peter &
St. Paul, Nadur. This title was bestowed by H.L. Mgr. Mario
Grech, Bishop of Gozo during a religious function. His first
public appearance vested in new uniform was during the
solemn procession.

Crime rate in
Ghajnsielem among lowest
(Saturday, 27th June
2009)
Statistical information obtained by
Ghajnsielem.com show that crime in Ghajnsielem is
among the lowest in Malta and Gozo. Crime has gone down by
25 per cent in four years, according to data. In fact the
number of crime reports dropped to 79 in 2008 from 108 in

magazine published

magazine. The publication features several interesting
articles including Dun Karm's 60th ordination anniversary,
the Archparish House, biography of Dun Pietru Pawl Ciantar,
the parish diary and the bells project.

Rare Bronze statuette
on display
(Tuesday, 16th June
2009)
A bronze statuette discovered in
Ghajnsielem in 1771 is currently on show at the Exhibition
Hall of Heritage Malta's Area Office at the Cittadella,
Victoria, Gozo. This statuette is being exhibited for the
first time in Gozo since its discovery two hundred and
thirty eight years ago. more
Solemnity of Corpus
Christi
(Sunday, 14th June
2009)
Today Ghajnsielem celebrated the
solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ,
traditionally known as the feast of Corpus Christi. The 23
children who recently received the First Holy Communion
took part in a short procession with the Blessed Sacrament
around the main streets of Ghajnsielem.

Modified Car Show
Festival
(Sunday, 14th June
2009)
The 2009 Gozo Auto Festival was
held today at the Gozo Heliport grounds were dozens of
Maltese and Gozitan modified cars, bikes and trucks were
exhibited for the joy of all those present. Several motor
clubs took part in this event.

Liturgical Feast of
St Anthony

This weekend, the Franciscan
Fraternity is celebrating the Liturgical Feast of St
Anthony, thus closing the official feast celebrations
dedicated to this Saint. The church was impressively
decorated for the occasion with activities starting on
Friday morning and ending the following day.

unveils new projects

refurbishment the club's premises, the executive committee
of St Joseph Band is
proudly unveiling a number of exciting projects which
include the upgrading of the main hall into a
multi-purpose hall, the addition of a
professional Snooker Hall and a new storage area.

holds AGM

The Ghajnsielem
Football Club held it's Annual General Meeting. Club
officials gave detailed summary of the club's administration
and financial affairs. Two important amendments to the
Club's Statute were also effected. The outgoing committee
was re-elected by the present members.

Gozo Heritage closes down

2009)
Seven thousand years of living
history have been lost to the public as the Gozo Heritage
museum in Ghajnsielem was forced to close its doors last
week, with one former senior employee citing the inability
of independent Gozitan attractions to compete with the low
rates that Heritage Malta offers tour operators.

Cardinal Majella
visits Ghajnsielem
(Saturday, 30th May

Cardinal Agnelo Gerardo Majella,
Primate of Brazil who presided over the festivities marking
the feast of St Paul in Munxar last week, visited
Ghajnsielem. In a short but very symbolic ceremony, he
inaugurated a course of catechises on the Beatitudes.

Work on church model

Works on the
replica model of the Old Parish Church are in advanced
stage as
Archpriest Emeritus Mons.
Joseph Zerafa is aiming to
finish this model by August of this year so that it will
be available for display during the feast week. The next
model in the pipeline is the Lourdes Chapel.

First Holy Communion
for 23 children

It was a special day for 23
girls and boys as they received their First Holy
Communion last Sunday afternoon. They left the Old
Parish church at 4.45pm and walked to the Ghajnsielem
parish together. A mass was then concelebrated by
Archpriest Can Frankie Bajada.

Church dome
restoration well underway
(Sunday, 24th May
2009)
Structural intervention works on
the lantern of the dome of the Ghajnsielem Archparish Church are well underway. The
restoration is taking place after cracks started to develop
on the upper part, leading to water leakage problems. Work is being carried out by local master
mason Leli Saliba. The lantern will be rebuilt in the
upcoming days. more
Primary school
organizes cultural activity

Primary school held a musical and cultural activity. The
event was well attended by the parents who were keen to see
their children taking part in the show.
The event was led by Headmistress Ms. Pauline

Join the St Joseph Band in Sicily
trip

The Executive
Committee today announced the details of a 4-Day trip in
Sicily
between the 28th of June and 1st of July 2009 for those
who want to accompany the St Joseph Band. The band has
been invited
by UNESCO
to take part in the feast of St Paul at Palazzolo Acreide
in Siracusa. The price is €290 (Lm125).

St Anthony's Feast
preparations underway
(Tuesday, 12th May
2009)
With only a few days to go, several youths are working
around the clock in order to finish the street decorations
of 'Tal-Gudja' area in time for the Feast of St
Anthony which this year will take place on the 31st of
May, opening the local feast season.

The Ghajnsielem
parish celebrated the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, better
known in Maltese as 'San Guzepp Haddiem'. An orchestra,
with the participation of Lauretana Choir accompanied the High
Mass which started at 5.00pm. The St Joseph band then accompanied the
procession around the main streets.

Blacks' season is
over

Ghajnsielem F.C. lost 0-2 to Victoria Hotspurs in the
first semi-final of the G.F.A. Cup competition. It is
the first time since 96/97 that the Blacks have not
featured in a major cup final and the first time since
03/04 that Ghajnsielem have not made it to the final.

in Sicily

The St Joseph Band has been invited by a UNESCO
representative to take part in the feast of St Paul at
Palazzolo Acreide, Siracusa in Scicily. This traditional
and popular feast is celebrated between the June 27 to
29 in a very magnificent and unique way. Their patron is St. Paul.

thanksgiving mass in honour of
Dun Karm
Cassar who recently celebrated the sixtieth
anniversary from his priesthood ordination. After the
mass, several members of the congregation walked up the
main aisle and one by one expressed their best wishes.

Yacht Club opens
Mgarr Photo Exhibition

Heartbreak: Decider next for Blacks

Ghajnsielem's Under/17s were moments away from being crowned
champions of their category, when Nadur shocked them with a
breakaway goal, to win the final match of the championship
pool 1-0 and thus force a decider.

GFA Cup semi-finals

the runners-up in the title race after an

season.

setback

However, the Blacks were heavily defeated by the Reds who

Dun Karm celebrates
his 60th ordination anniversary

Dun Karm
Cassar is today celebrating his sixtieth anniversary
of his ordination.
Dedicated his entire life to his native village, Dun
Karm Cassar was heavily involved in many areas which
shaped Ghajnsielem in the 20th century including the
Ghajnsielem Parish, St Joseph Band, Ghajnsielem Football
Club, the Catholic Action Youth Center, Krucjata Ewkaristika
and Circolo Virgo Lauretana.

Biography

Ghajnsielem F.C. managed to obtain qualification to the
quarter finals with two goals scored during the second

Ghajnsielem secured a crucial
2-1 victory over Sannat Lions with a Joseph Buttigieg goal
two minutes into injury time. After this dramatic win
Ghajnsielem find themselves level on points with Sannat. The
Blacks will take on Victoria Hotspurs in their next league
match, and Sannat Lions will close the season with a clash
against S.K. Victoria Wanderers. Should the two teams
register the same result, a decider will be contested
between Ghajnsielem and Sannat to determine the 2008/09 1st
division champion.

Contract for the
three bigger bells signed
(Monday, 6th April
2009)
Archpriest Fr. Frankie Bajada signed the contract for
the three bigger bells from the set of eight which will
crown the bell tower of our church. The contract was
signed at the Cornille-Havard foundry in Villedieu les
Poelles in Normandy, France, a city which very
interestingly was founded by the Knights of Malta.

Ghajnsielem beat S.K. Victoria W. 4-0. This was an all
important match, but all minor skirmishes compared to
the battles that loom ahead. So the referee's final
whistle signalled the end of the phoney war, and the
first drumbeats of the real war.

Devotees celebrate
Our Lady of Sorrow

Hundreds followed the solemn
procession of Our Lady of Sorrow which went round the
main streets of the village. The
procession took the form of a pageant
with various participants dressed up in period costumes
to represent Biblical personalities.
The St Joseph Band accompanied the
procession with funeral marches.

Club. The meeting which also included a multimedia

attended by several bandsmen and members.

matches of the season.
The blacks are the main
contenders to Sannat Lions for the title.

2009 Holy Week
activities announced

Several activities starting as early as next week have
been announced to mark the Holy Week. These include
re-enactments a devotional procession and several other
spiritual activities. On Palm Sunday, the St Joseph Band
will also inaugurate an artistic Holy Week Exhibition
which will remain open until Easter.

Restoration on St.
Cecilia Chapel starts

After a decade of controversy and appeals from several
NGO's, restoration works on the medieval Chapel of St.
Cecilia has finally started. Partly dilapidated but
still in its original form it is considered one of the
best surviving examples of the un-aisled chapels that
were once common in the Maltese Islands.

Ghajnsielem F.C. grabbed three valuable points with a
3-0 win over Kercem Ajax that brought them level with
S.K. Victoria Wanderers in second place only three
points behind leaders Sannat Lions. Sarkis Goncalves
scored twice while Alex Viana scored the other as the
Blacks reeled off their fourth win on the trot.

the title race starts entering into its hottest stages,
the Ghajnsielem F.C. committee organized a fund-raising
event at the Club's premises. During the event which was
well attended by the players and supporters, a sponsor
was donated to the Club. Meanwhile the Blacks will be
back in action next Sunday.

prepares for Easter

Radju Lauretana’s crew is preparing for the upcoming
Easter Schedule which starts on Sunday 29th March. Test
transmissions will be carried out on the 28th. Programs

coverage of the Holy Week Celebrations, features,
cultural programmes, music etc.

honours with a fine 2-0 win over Nadur Youngsters. Brian
Meilak and Joseph Attard scored the goals in this hard
fought match. The win meant that the Blacks kept pace
with front runners Sannat Lions and second-placed S.K.
Victoria Wanderers.

Seminarist Samuel Grech made Lector

It
was a special day for Samuel Grech who together with
four other seminarians
received the ministry of Lectorate at a special
concelebrating presided by H.L. Mgr Mario Grech.
The ceremony took place at the collegiate
parish church of Nadur. They are now in their fifth year
of formation at the Gozo seminary.

Kercem Ajax. Alex Viana, who had missed a penalty early

For
the second year running, the Ghajnsielem Primary School
organized a colourful mix of dances, songs and custom
competitions for the children. Although the show was
held in the main hall due to the cold weather, the
activity was well attended by the parents and several
Ghajnslemizi.

'L-Akbar Sigriet'
staged at Parish Centre

2009)
The
Ghajnsielem Drama Group staged 'L-Akbar Sigriet' written
by Lino Grech to a full house at Lauretana Parish Centre
both on Monday (eve of a Public Holiday) and today. The
three-act play was directed by Anthony Buttigieg. The
play centred around a priest and the secret of
Confession.

Picnic at Ta Passi: A taste of things to come
(Sunday, 10th February 2009)
After spending the whole morning dismantling the last
remaining structures at 'Ta Passi' fields, dozens of
volunteers organized a picnic together with their
families in the open fields. Mayor Francis Cauchi said
that the Local Council will soon submit an application
to turn 'Ta Passi' fields into a permanent recreational
park.

Nativity Village
structures being dismantled
(Saturday, 7th February 2009)
After almost four weeks of strong winds and heavy rain,
the 'Bethlehem f' Ghajnsielem' organizers started to
dismantle the wooden structures at 'Ta Passi' fields.
The Ghajnsielem Local Council is providing a large
warehouse to store these structures. The volunteers will
be meeting again on Tuesday.

family awarded Qalb tad-Deheb

Family Saliba from Ghajnsielem was recently awarded the
'Familja Qalb tad-Deheb', sponsored by the Gozo Cana
Movement. The award was presented by President Eddie
Fenech Adami during an evening held at Hotel Ta' Ċenċ.
Mayor Francis Cauchi also presented a commemorative gift

to hold AGM

The Musical Archive and the Refurbishment
of the Committee room will be high on the agenda as the
St Joseph Band Club holds its annual AGM on Friday 13th
February at 6.30pm. After electing the new committee for
2009/10, a series of initiatives to finance the costs of

Ghajnsielem landmark... this time
the "Ghajn tal-Hasselin".
The famous spring literally used to be the central
meeting point of the first people that formed the
Ghajnsielem community as we know it today.

Dun Karm Cassar
donates
set of gothic candleholders

A
new set of 10 French Gothic style candleholders, were
recently displayed for the first time in the Chapel of
the Blessed Sacrament of the Ghajnsielem Parish Church
to compliment the Holy Eucharist Tabernacle, also in
gothic design. These candleholders were donated by Rev.
Fr. Karm Cassar.

another draw

Ghajnsielem F.C. drew 1-1 in
their 2nd round match against S.K. Victoria W. The draw
was of little use to the two combatants, and suited
Sannat Lions the most. Earlier in the afternoon, the
Lions beat Nadur Youngsters 2-0 and stretched
their lead over the Wanderers to 3

Get-Together for
volunteers and actors

The organizers of 'Bethlehem f'
Ghajnsielem' organized a get-together for all
volunteers, helpers and actors who gave a helping hand
in making the nativity village at 'Ta Passi' a success.
Over 300 volunteers were present for the event which was
sponsored by the management of the Grand Hotel.

Christmas schedule
comes to an end

Radju Lauretana's has just ended its
transmission as the Christmas schedule comes to an end.
But broadcasting will resume on 29th March for the
Easter. The Christmas Schedule included
exclusive transmissions from Loreto, the Ursoline
Sisters Crèche in Sliema and from the live crib at Ta
Passi.

organized by Ghajnsielem F.C. for all tis players and
supporters. During a short speech for the occasion, Club
President Sammy Rapa honoured of all the present and
past footballers who wore the Black and White strip. more

Ghajnsielem comes
to an end

All
good things come to an end... and this was indeed the
case at 'Ta Passi' fields after 4 weeks of animation and
3 months of voluntary work.
It is calculated that approximately 55,000 visited the
Nativity Village.

Sunburst donated to
Franciscan Fraternity

The
Franciscan community celebrated the Epiphany with a Holy
Mass led by P. Joseph Magro ofm. During the offertory,
the Franciscan Fraternity was presented with a Silver
Sunburst, the work of silversmith George Farrugia. The
Sunburst was donated by his family and will be placed
behind Baby Jesus's head.

Day trip in Malta
for young students

The
Ghajnsielem Parish organized a trip to Malta for the
students who attended the Christmas Novena last year.
The group departed with the 7.30am ferry boat and
visited Valletta, Sliema and Baystreet. The trip
included a visit to the Ursoline sisters where the
students learned about their community life and work.
