Salvinu took over from Noe Zerafa as
the Club's captain early in the 1969/70 and became the youngest
captain in Club history at just over 17 years of age. He had the
distinction of being the first Black to lift the coveted Renton
Cup, the league championship trophy. The image of Kav. Koli Apap,
President of the G.F.A. presenting this trophy to Salvinu is
etched in the memory of every supporter of this Club
.
He kept the captain's armband for two seasons before handing it
over to Loreto Galea early in the 1971/72 season.
Salvinu's career started with the
Club's minors. He was on the team that won the first
championship for the Club in the 1965/66 season. In the
following season he was often with the senior squad as a
substitute. He made one appearance that season and several more
the season after. He featured in the reserves team that won the
championship in 1967/68 and also won the Galea Cup with the
senior side. After the barren 1968/69 season came the five years
of glory. Salvinu's role was often that of a left full-back,
although like most of his team-mates he was versatile enough to
play in other positions such as that of half-back. However, he
did not limit his contribution to the team to purely defensive
duties. He often joined in the attack providing penetration from
wide left particularly when Vincent Cutajar had dragged his
direct marker infield on one of his decoy runs. Being naturally
left-footed Salvinu Xuereb's crosses from the wing were
exquisite and often ended up in the back-of the net. Case in
point was the cross he supplied to George Fenech in the G.F.A.
Cup final of 1973/74 which was redirected into the net by Fenech
for the definitive 2-0 against Sannat Lions.
Salvinu Xuereb handed the torch to
Frank Xuereb midway through the tortuous 1973/74 season.
However,
these two great players did play for most of the 1974/75 season
together. Peter Caruana tried a number of combinations and
settled upon Frank as left-back and Salvinu as left-wing or
inside-forward. The most memorable achievement of this left
sided combination was the narrow 1-0 victory against Sannat
Lions in the second round which revived the Blacks' hopes of a
successful defence of their championship.
Salvinu called it quits at the end
of that season. Apart from the troublesome knee, Salvinu had
also started to work abroad. Reputedly an avid collector of Club
memorabilia, Salvinu cannot be blamed if he occasionally steals
a grin of satisfaction at the glory he bathed in as a very young
footballer.
