Welcome to
the
Official Website of the
Ghajnsielem Local Council
Local Government was established in 1993 following the
Maltese Parliament’s approval, on 30th June 1993, of the
Local Councils Act, 1993 (Act No. XV of 1993).
The Local Councils Act was modelled on the European Charter
of Local Self-Government, which the Maltese Government had
signed and ratified. According to this Act, "The Council
shall be a statutory local government authority having a
distinct legal personality and capable of entering into
contracts, of suing and being sued, and of doing all such
things and entering into such transactions as are incidental
or conducive to the exercise and performance of its
functions as are allowed under the Act."
The village of Ghajnsielem is
situated in the small island of Gozo, Malta's sister-island.
Malta is situated in the centre of the Mediterranean - 93 km
south of Italy and 290 km north of North Africa. Gozo lies
about 5 km in the North West of Malta and the distance
between Ċirkewwa in Malta and Mgarr Harbour in Gozo,
involves a 25 minute ferry crossing.
This website aims to facilitate
the contact between the local citizens and the Ghajnsielem
Local Council while keeping the public up-to-date with
what's happening in our village.
