Basic
Art:
This
Course provides students with the very simple and elementary techniques in
art. Students start with simple drawings from nature in pencil and
charcoal.
Oil/Water
Colour Painting:
From the Basic Art Course,
students proceed to this section. Students in this section are encouraged
to develop a lively curiosity to explore and experiment in visual terms,
imagination, powers of acute observation, personal enthusiasm and pleasure
in art. The first year course is spent in establishing the basic
vocabulary in two and three dimensions.
Pyrography:
Pyrography, the art of burning
wood, was first practiced by African and American Indian tribes and the
Ancient Egyptians. Pyrography is an exciting method of making pictures or
decorating plain wooden objects. Pictures or patterns in Pyrography may be
figurative or geometric. It entails details and precision. Students should
possess a good knowledge of pencil design.
Lace Making Course:
The aim of this course is to
promote and encourage one of the most traditional crafts in the Maltese
Islands – Lace Making. The course consists of a three-year course.
Gilding:
Gilding is the application of
alloys and precious metals, like gold and silver. The aim of this course
is to promote the theoretical and practical aspects of this traditional
skill known only to a dozen gilders. The instructions and teaching process
starts from gesso preparations, polychrome, oil and water laid mordents.
Clay Modeling &
Casting:
This course is to develop the
students’ ability in evaluating and translating ideas into two and three
dimensions. The materials available include local clay, plaster of Paris
and molding rubber. Students should possess a good knowledge in pencil
design.
Wood
Sculpture:
Similarly, as in clay modeling,
students should be capable of evaluating and translating ideas in two and
three dimensions. First year students are taught the importance in the
handling of tools and materials, second year students proceed to two/three
dimensional studies in wood (material used in mainly mahogany).
Students
should possess a good knowledge in pencil design.
Silver
Filigree:
This is a Two-year Course in
Silversmith knowledge of pencil design is an advantage.
Pottery / Ceramics:
This course provides
opportunities for students to develop individual skills and to experiment
in the production of useful materials based on clay, after drying and
baking. Creativity is encouraged.
Stained Glass:
This
Course provides the students with opportunity in developing their
creativity and imagination. A good knowledge in Basic design is essential.
