Ghajnsielem
Football Club is one of the best-supported teams in Gozo. In the Club’s
heydays nary a man, woman or child could be found in Ghajnsielem during
games marking the unstoppable march to the heady heights reached in the
seventies. When the Club descended into mediocrity in the eighties and
early nineties, some of its stunned fans stayed away from the Silver
Jubilee Ground (now known as the Gozo Stadium). However, this does not
mean that Ghajnsielem F.C.’s fortunes are not followed rabidly by its
supporters. Hundreds of fans now follow the action on radio or web.
Newspaper reports on Club matches are perused attentively by one and all.
As the Club has steadily risen back to respectability, challenging for
honours year in year out, happily the fans are flocking back to the Gozo
Stadium, to lend their support to their beloved Blacks.
According to
the Statute of Ghajnsielem Football Club, there are two forms of club
membership: super member and common member. The fee for super member is
presently Lm60; the fee for common member is presently Lm5. The basic
right of both classes of members consists of the right to attend to and
vote in the annual general meeting and any extraordinary general meeting
that may be held from time to time. Voting usually relates to matters such
as election of committee members, motions to amend the club statute, and
so on. It is also important to note that in order for a person to be
elected to the positions of club president, secretary or treasurer, such
person has to have been a club member in the preceding season. The extra
rights attached to a super member are subject to change from year to year.
In an effort
to bolster revenue from this source, the committee put into
practice a
new membership scheme which divides the class of
super member into silver (fee minimum of Lm50) and gold (fee minimum of
Lm100). This scheme was a success and has met wide
public acceptance.
