Football in Gozo commenced shortly after
completion of construction of the Silver
Jubilee Ground. The Zammit Cup final was
organized as part of the festivities
connected with the inauguration of the
new football ground. Father Bernard
Hersey presented the Għajnsielem Sea
Scouts, a club that he had founded, and
the Victoria Scouts. Ghajnsielem,
coached by Carmelo Mallia, won the cup
final with two second half goals scored
by Ġużeppi Cassar and Elija Debono.
This historic match was refereed by
captain Thatcher. Għajnsielem played in
yellow and green, vertically striped
shirts. |
