The 1958/59 season
will forever be remembered for
the conquest of the Esso Cup.
Għajnsielem triumphed in the inaugural
edition of this cup competition by
beating Xewkija United in the final.
After a scoreless first half Anthony
Bajada nudged the Blacks ahead. John
Debono put the match beyond Xewkija's
reach with a brace of goals. The match
was marred by Xewkija United's departure
from the field of play with five minutes
left on the watch and Għajnsielem
leading by three goals to nil. Referee
Eddie Agius abandoned the match. The
G.F.A. later confirmed the final score
and on a later occasion presented the
Esso Cup to Għajnsielem. |
