Għajnsielem F.C. were losing
finalists in the inaugural edition of
this competition in 1964, the year Malta
gained its Independence. This season
Għajnsielem beat first division
league runners-up S.K. Calypsians in the
final. This after they had also
eliminated champions Victoria Hotspurs
and 3rd placed team, Nadur Youngsters.
Loreto Galea opened the score in the
first half with a blistering shot. Guest
player Carmel Xerri doubled the lead in
the second half direct from a corner
kick. S.K. Calypsians, however, pulled
one back with less than ten minutes to
go through a John Grech header. The
Blacks, led by the other guest player,
G.F.A. Footballer of the Year, George
Schembri and goalkeeper Toni Buttigieg
held on for a famous triumph. |
