Għajnsielem F.C. won the first
minor league championship in club
history in the 1965/66 season. The team
was led by Loreto Galea, who was already
a regular starter in the senior team.
The Blacks' opponents
were Victoria Hotspurs and Victoria
Wanderers. Għajnsielem looked on their
way to an easy title when they swept
their opponents in the first round with
identical 2-0 wins. A 0-1 reversal
against Hotspurs in the second round
meant that Għajnsielem and Hotspurs
finished the season equal on points
because each team completed the double
on Victoria Wanderers. A decider was
necessary. The two teams battled to a
1-1 draw, with Loreto Galea scoring for
the Blacks. This meant that a replay had
to be played. Għajnsielem emerged
victorious by a Loreto Galea penalty
goal to nil. |
