Għajnsielem F.C. scaled to (as yet)
unreachable heights this season by
winning their fifth first division
league championship title in a row. The
Blacks looked on their way to another
blowout campaign when they won four out
of five first round matches. They took
the wrong turn in their second round
opener against Victoria Hotspurs and
nearly lost their way. The Reds were
fighting relegation in the lower regions
of the first division standings when
they beat the Blacks 1-0. Għajnsielem
drew two of their next three games and
Hotspurs kept winning to draw level with
the Blacks on points atop the first
division table. Victoria H. beat Xewkija
T. in their last match of the regular
season. This meant that Għajnsielem went
in their season finale against Nadur Y.
needing to win merely to force a
decider. Għajnsielem fell behind but two
Leli Refalo goals gave Għajnsielem a
narrow victory and set the stage for a
showdown between Għajnsielem F.C., the
team that had dominated football in the
early seventies, and Victoria Hotspurs,
the team that the Blacks sought to
supplant as the top football club in
Gozo. Although Għajnsielem dominated the
tense decider at a packed Silver Jubilee
Ground, they needed Frans Magro's last
gasp goal to overcome the Reds, secure
the fifth consecutive league title. |
