Għajnsielem F.C. won the third
minor league championship in club
history in the 1977/78 season. The
Blacks' chances for glory appeared low
after an early season defeat to title
contenders Xewkija Tigers. Two of the
five teams in the minor league, Nadur
Youngsters and Żebbuġ Rovers dropped out
in the middle of the season, and the
Blacks registered three walk-over wins.
Għajnsielem then took three out of four
points from the other contender,
Calypsian Bosco Youths. The Tigers and
the Youths dropped points in their
direct encounters. This meant that the
final match of the season between
Għajnsielem and Xewkija
became a virtual decider for the title.
Alfio Rapa's powerful header from a
corner-kick late in the match sent the
championship title to Għajnsielem. |
