Fresh from promotion to division one,
the Club harboured ambitions to
challenge immediately for honours. The
Blacks’ start to the season was
unconvincing. They were eliminated by
Victoria H. in the semi-final of the
Independence Cup and drew their league
opener against S.K. Victoria W. The
Committee pinned the team’s problems on
Peter Caruana and, showing unusual
impatience, dismissed him. Ray Briffa
took over control of the side, with the
assistance of secretary Alex Spiteri
with Robert Kelly acting as consultant.
Despite all this, the Blacks struggled
desperately and failed to win a match in
the first round, scoring only one goal
in the process. Two early second round
wins lifted the Blacks to sixth place,
clear of the relegation zone and the
Blacks avoided the drop with a win over
Żebbuġ R. in the last match of the
season. Għajnsielem were awarded
the Fair Play trophy sponsored by Super
One. |
