Għajnsielem F.C. started the
2002/03 season by
winning the Independence Cup in sudden
death extra-time over Xewkija T. This
match was a war of attrition. In
sweltering heat the two teams were at
each other's throats, Xewkija dominated
the first half, Għajnsielem took the
initiative in the second. Għajnsielem
struck the goal frame twice and Xewkija
once. The match went into sudden death
extra-time. With two minutes to go,
Loreto Scicluna dispossessed a Xewkija
forward and exchanged passes with Errol
Grima wide on the left. Scicluna
advanced unimpeded towards the Tigers’
penalty area, dummied left before
swinging a cross towards Jeremy
Camilleri. The ball bounced towards
Joseph Attard II, who controlled it,
shifted right and then unleashed a shot
back across to the left hand corner of
the net. The Blacks' supporters went
absolutely wild. Needless to say, the
drained players mustered whatever energy
they had left to leap around in joy and
relief. That is how the Independence Cup
returned to Għajnsielem after an absence
of fifteen years. |
