This was the second match of the
1975/76
league
season. Għajnsielem had lost to
Sannat in the opening match and
in this match had to face the
reigning champions, Xewkija
Tigers. Everyone expected the
match to be evenly balanced,
however, three first half goals
scored by Nikol Cutajar with two
and Toni Cauchi, put Għajnsielem
completely in control of this
match. Twelve minutes into the
second half George Fenech was
brutally fouled by a Xewkija
player. Michael Scicluna, Club
president at the time, who was
acting as masseur, came in to
attend to this player's facial
injuries. Once he was on the
field the same Xewkija player
that had felled Fenech attacked
Scicluna. The referee, Sammy
Privitera, promptly abandoned
the match.
It was shocking that the G.F.A.
ordered this match to be
replayed. For the record,
justice was done this time
because Għajnsielem won 4-2 on
goals by George Fenech, Nikol
Cutajar and Vincent Cutajar (2).
