The Salesian Youths took
Gozitan football by storm. In the period from 1948/49 to 1958/59
they secured five first division championships, two Galea Cup
triumphs, the Coronation Cup, a share of the Liberty Cup and the
Dingli Cup. The only final they ever lost was the M.G. Cup. Their
booty would have been much bigger were it not for the constant
interruption in the organization of football in Gozo. Ghajnsielem's
record against the Youths was abysmal only three wins from seventeen
matches played, eleven defeats, sixteen goals for, thirty eight
goals against. Ghajnsielem
were coming off two losses against the Youths from the 1948/49 debut
season for this team. They had to wait until March, 1959 for another win,
going winless for ten matches against this powerhouse. This was obviously
a terrific performance by our team, sporting at the time a blue and white
shirt (Blackburn Rovers style) and dark (black or blue shorts). Of
historic significance was the hat-trick of goals scored by Carmel Galea.
This is the first ever hat-trick on record registered by an Ghajnsielem
player. The only other possible time that such a feat could have been
achieved was in a 3-1, 1945 first division league victory over the Nadur
Ramblers when all three scorers are unknown. Ghajnsielem
were determined to win. They made use of two Maltese guest players, Saliba
and Preca from Birkirkara F.C., both of whom played very well. Michael
Bugeja was spectacular in goal. With a slight wind at their back,
Ghajnsielem held the initiative in the first half and did not take too
long to open the score through Galea. Shortly after the same Galea made it
2-0. The Youths reduced the arrears with a Gauci goal. Then Michael Bugeja
saved a penalty shot taken by Morgan. Just before the break, Ghajnsielem
added two more, first through a Cremona own goal and then through Galea
who thus completed his hat-trick. The Salesian Youths tried hard to get
back into the game but they only managed to score one more goal through
Morgan. Unfortunately,
after doing all the hard work in eliminating the Salesian Youths from the
Galea Cup, Ghajnsielem went on to lose the cup final against Xewkija
Tigers 2-3 in a replay. The first match had ended in a 1-1 after extra
time had been given. It
is also worth noting that Ghajnsielem had not registered in time to
participate in the first division. So the league campaign went ahead
without our team. Ghajnsielem did participate in three cup competitions in
which they faced all four first division teams and acquitted themselves
rather well. A win, a draw and one loss against champions Salesian Youths.
A win against runners-up Fontana St. Andrews. A win against Victoria
Hotspurs. And a loss and a tie against bottom club Xewkija Tigers. With
this kind of record, this season surely must go down in the "what
might have been category". This
was not the last time that the Club would have misgivings of this
sort. In 1959/60, the Blacks, led by Benigno Magro and John Debono were in
great form. In fact they swept the Cutajar Cup claiming the scalps of St.
George's, Nadur Y. and Xaghra Y.S. The Blacks would not get the
opportunity to translate this cup form into league dominance, however,
because the first division competition did not take place. The G.F.A.
simply organized a four-team league which did not include Ghajnsielem and
called it the second division. In 1965/66, the team ran away with the second division title
and won the Independence Cup by disposing of the top three teams in the
First Division, champions Victoria Hotspurs, runners-up S.K. Calypsians
and third placed Nadur Youngsters. In 1984/85, Ghajnsielem similarly
cruised through their second division league commitments, and watched in
horror Victoria Hotspurs get crowned champions with a 3-5-2 record, six
goals for and three goals against. To add to the agony, the Blacks used
three first division clubs, Sannat Lions, Nadur Youngsters and the same
champions-by-default, Victoria Hotspurs, as stepping-stones in their march
to the G.F.A. Cup final where they lost in heartbreak fashion 0-1 to
Xewkija Tigers on a bizarre own-goal. Finally, in 1998/99 Ghajnsielem
spent a year in purgatory, dispatched there by treachery from the
champions-elect Xaghra United the season before, and watched as Nadur
Youngsters stumbled to the finish line with a 7-7-2 record. In the
meantime Ghajnsielem won their division in runaway style and made it to
three cup finals, winning one, the Super Cup final with a 6-2 score line, which
is more akin to tennis than football.
