HISTORY
Great Games
vs Sannat L. 2-0
G.F.A. Cup Final 1973/74
November 25, 1973

This was the Club's first triumph in the G.F.A. Cup. It is one of only two cup final victories over Sannat Lions in the Club's history. The Club went on to lose six consecutive finals against this team, two of which in the G.F.A. Cup in the seasons 74/75 and 75/76.

Indeed, it represents one of the last few moments were the Club came ahead of the Lions for a long time.

In this fixture was witnessed the birth of a brand new style of football in Gozo combining skill with insolence, intimidation and rough play. George Schembri, a real gentleman in the Ghajnsielem side, recalls telling a Sannat Lions player that they destroyed the joy in the sport of football with the way that they played and with what they did away from the action (kicking the opponent in the ankles, for example).

So, the match itself represented a swan song of sorts for Ghajnsielem's brand of winning football which combined skill, speed, stamina and intricate teamwork. In the years to come this type of football was squashed by the physical football adopted by the likes of Sannat Lions and Xewkija Tigers.

The match itself can be described as a disappointment. Ghajnsielem took the lead from their first serious attack on the Sannat Lions net. In the seventh minute, Toni Cauchi's cross created confusion in the Sannat defence and George Fenech took advantage by thumping the ball home for a 1-0 lead. Shortly after Sannat's Cardona saved well from a Loreto Galea drive. Leli Refalo almost doubled the score in the 27th minute, however, Cardona saved well again. Sannat did create some anxious moments for the Blacks defence but never really threatened Francis Cauchi's goal. The match was otherwise conducted at a leisurely pace by Ghajnsielem and Sannat were happy to sit back and be only one goal down.

The monotony of the match resumed in the second half, until Salvinu Xuereb attacked down the left around the fifteen minute mark. His cross was met acrobatically by George Fenech for his and the Blacks' second goal. This goal sprung Ghajnsielem to life and their play improved considerably. Sannat's only ambition was to send as many Blacks to the nearby hospital. In the closing fifteen minutes of the match the Lions put on a thoroughly negative display of football that ridiculed the game and incurred the disgust of the viewing public. The final whistle was welcomed with utter joy by the Blacks not so much for the historic first triumph in the G.F.A. Cup but more because it signaled the end of the beating to which they had been subjected by Sannat's "players".
