This
match against Victoria Hotspurs was the first since the previous
season's 0-2 shock setback by the Blacks at the hands of Hotspurs
that handed the title to Nadur Youngsters. Ghajnsielem were
determined to make the citizens pay for this. And so they did. The
4-0 drubbing was the first of a three season long ten game unbeaten
streak in direct confrontations with Hotspurs.
The victory's true
historical significance could not possibly be apparent at the time.
It was the first win in Peter Caruana’s coaching career.
Ghajnsielem F.C. would go on to win well over two hundred more
matches and close to thirty trophies under his leadership. No other
coach comes close to this level of success in Club, and possibly
Gozitan football history.
Peter Caruana was thirty
eight at the time and was winding down a long and successful playing
career with the Club. He was appointed coach after the end of the
1967/68 season. The new season started with a Galea Cup semi-final
match against reigning champions Nadur Y. Missing at the back for
Ghajnsielem was George Schembri who was not available for selection
at the time. It was more due to his absence than to Mr. Caruana's
inexperience that Ghajnsielem succumbed to the Youngsters 0-3, with
all the goals coming in the second half.
After
a month's wait came the opening game of the league season, a plum
fixture against Victoria Hotspurs who had just recently beaten the
Youngsters in the Galea Cup final. Ghajnsielem were keen to bounce
back from the humiliating loss to Nadur. The Hotspurs' defense was
surprisingly generous on the day and after fifteen minutes
Ghajnsielem opened the score. A Vincent Cutajar header came off the
post for George Mercieca to tap home from close range. One minute
before the half-time whistle Ghajnsielem doubled the score through
Toni Cauchi. Hotspurs did put some pressure on the Blacks in the
second half but were vulnerable to swift breaks from the Ghajnsielem
forwards. On one such counter-attack, Vincent Cutajar made it 3-0. A
little later Toni Cauchi scored the fourth goal following some
individual work on the right and in so doing put the finishing touch
on Peter Caruana's first win as the head coach of our Club.
