HISTORY
Great Games
vs Victoria H. 0-6
First Division Second Round 1993/94
March 6, 1994

Until this match, the heaviest defeat suffered by the Blacks in a league match was 0-5. This had happened three times: twice in the 1980/81 season, against Sannat Lions and the same Victoria Hotspurs, and once earlier this 93/94 season, against the Nadur Youngsters. This 0-6 loss, therefore, set a new low for the Blacks.

Were it not for the mercy displayed by Hotspurs, evident in their introduction of two defenders in place of strikers Dione Lautier and Kevin Mifsud at half-time, the score might have been even higher. They were up 5-0 inside thirty nine minutes courtesy of a Lautier hat-trick, an own-goal and a Michael Cremona direct free-kick. The sixth was scored just after the interval by Alexi Ivanov. Ghajnsielem deserved a consolation goal but failed to get even that. Loreto Scicluna hit the bar, Sandro Spiteri's first half effort went just wide and Sammy Hassan missed from the penalty spot in the second half.

Victoria Hotspurs went on to win their ninth championship in their history that season. Ghajnsielem recovered from the debacle to finish clear of the relegation zone. Was this just a case of a struggling side running into a hot team on the latter's way to glory? The Blacks had acquitted themselves admirably in their three previous encounters with Hotspurs that season. An 0-2 loss in the Independence Cup, an 0-1 loss in the first round league match and a triumph in the G.F.A. Cup on penalties after the match had ended 2-2. This last match was fresh on the Hotspurs' minds as it had taken place just one month before this league encounter. On paper this was hardly what you would call a mismatch. What is more, the Blacks have historically never been psychologically burdened in their encounters with the Victoria side. The match-ups tend to be even contests open to any conceivable outcome regardless of the two sides' position in the league table.

The Blacks' problem in 93/94 was not the defence, it was the attack: 8 goals scored in 14 matches. Barring the 5 conceded in the aforementioned loss to Nadur and the 6 conceded in this match, Ghajnsielem conceded a respectable 11 goals in the remaining twelve matches, less than a goal a game. To those who witnessed the carnage (in these two matches) things just did not add up. The marking assignments from the recent cup tie with the Hotspurs were scrapped for less sensible ones and the intensity level from some players was alarmingly low. As a result the Victoria side ran roughshod over the Blacks and left this blotch on our Club's record.
