HISTORY
The Champions

ALFRED AZZOPARDI
Date of birth: February 5, 1956
Nationality: Maltese
Position: inside-forward
Debut: May 5, 1974
Last match: February 28, 1976
Appearances for Club: 6
Goals for Club: 0

Alfred Azzopardi featured as a Maltese guest player for the Club in parts of the 1973/74 and 1975/76 seasons. He played for Hamrun Spartans and was part of the exchange of players between Ghajnsielem and Hamrun in the seventies. Azzopardi scored one of the two goals against Hereford United in the prestigious friendly that the Club played against the English side in May, 1974. Indeed, he put on a great performance in midfield on that day.

He was introduced as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw with Xewkija Tigers in the penultimate game of the 1973/74 season. He then started in the last match of the season against Nadur Y. and in the decider against Victoria Hotspurs. In these two crucial matches, Alfred only lasted for one half and had to be substituted. He was feeling the effects of a long season with the Spartans. Furthermore, with the Hamrun side's season already closed by late May and early June he had also lost peak fitness. Nevertheless, Freddie can claim that he was one of the thirty three players that contributed to the monumental achievements of the Club in the early seventies.

Freddie was brought back for three pivotal games in the middle of 1975/76 season. The Blacks won one but lost the other two (against Sannat Lions and Xewkija Tigers). Having lost the chance to regain the title the Club did not call on Azzopardi's services again.
