Frans Magro
tragically lost his life while working abroad in the late eighties. Thanks
to one moment of inspiration on June 8, 1974 he lives on, and will live
on, in the memory of all those that love the Club. That was the day in
which the decider for the 1973/74 league title was held. With two minutes
to go, Frans threw himself headlong at a Toni Cauchi cross from the right
and connected solidly with the ball sending it to the back of the net.
Victoria Hotspurs did not recover, and Frans Magro's name has been
synonymous with this conquest ever since.
Prior
to that fateful day, Frans had made three other
appearances as a substitute that same season all in decisive
league encounters for the Club. The diminutive striker
would be brought in by Peter Caruana as a tactical move,
which involved pushing Vincent Cutajar back into midfield
and Frans Magro wide left. So Frans's contributions to the
fifth league were quite substantial. Frans then saw a lot
of action in the 1974/75 season when the Blacks fell just
short of an unprecedented sixth consecutive title.
Frans'
career with the Club started in the minors. He was
champion with the minors in 1971/72, and then again with the reserves in 1972/73.
Like his team-mates from those teams, Frank Xuereb, Mario
Camilleri, George Fenech and Philip Camilleri, he
completed a treble of titles with the championship of 1973/74.
He managed to make a few appearances in the 1984/85 season
so that one can also add a second division championship to
Frans' credit.
Frans
was an elusive player, very agile and with a striker's
scoring instinct. Unfortunately, his career was
interrupted by injury and work commitments abroad. His
life was cruelly cut short by a mysterious mishap in
Libya. The trophy room in the new Club premises has been
named "the Frans Magro Trophy Room" in memory of
this loved player who will remain forever young.
