The inaugural edition of the
Noel Vassallo Cup, a competition open for first division teams, was won by
the Nadur Youngsters. The freshly crowned champions had to work hard for
the honour against Zebbug R. however because the final was decided on
penalties after the two teams had battled to a 2-2 draw. The extra-time
did not produce a winner. Then the Youngsters scored eight penalties while
Zebbug scored seven.

Today is the 67th anniversary of
the founding of Ghajnsielem Football Club. On May 21, 1936 Ghajnsielem
played against the Victoria Scouts for the Zammit Cup at the Silver
Jubilee Ground. This match marks the inauguration of the Silver Jubilee
Ground, the birth of the Gozo Football Association and the beginning of
organized football in Gozo. More importantly for the Club, the date of the
first official match is generally considered as the date of the founding
of Ghajnsielem Football Club. The Ghajnsielem side (see picture below
taken some time after the final), then wearing yellow and green stripes,
emerged victorious 2-1 against the favourites from Victoria, on the
strength of goals by Elija Debono and Joseph Cassar.

Under/16
side restores Club pride
May
13
The Under/16 side's success in
the season-ending cup competition has filled the Club with optimism over
the future. Under the guidance of Alex
Spiteri, the young Blacks overcame three tough rivals in
impressive fashion to ensure that the Club's youth teams do not end their
season empty-handed. Four members of the cup winning side have already
made their first team debut: Jonathan
Debono, Joseph
Grech, Frank
Galea and Larry
Buttigieg. Mark
Xuereb, Roderick Apap, James Grima, Kenneth Mercieca, Jonathan
Grech, Miguel Refalo may not be far away from inclusion in the senior
squad. The same can be said of David Debattista, Anthony Buttigieg,
Charlon Grima, George Bugeja, Joseph Ciantar and all the others that
featured with the team this season. Having spent so much effort on their
development thus far, the Club must find a way of ensuring the realization
of their full potential as football players in the months ahead.

Young
Blacks show seniors the way in dramatic cup final
May
11
Ghajnsielem F.C.'s Under/16 side
won the season-ending knockout with a thrilling 3-2 win over Nadur
Youngsters. The young Blacks were the better side throughout but made hard
work of it in the end. Larry Buttigieg gave Ghajnsielem a first half lead
with a magical free-kick. Nadur drew level before the break and then took
a shock lead after the restart. Ghajnsielem pulled all the stops to save
the match. Charlon Grima, long-absent from the side, was thrown in. Alex
Spiteri's move paid immediate dividends when Grima was coolness personified
when all alone in front of the Nadur keeper. He lobbed the ball over the
keeper and into the net for the equalizer (see below). A few minutes later the Blacks
scored the winner. Frank Galea's free kick was headed towards goal by
Larry Buttigieg. The ball ricocheted off the Nadur keeper and Jonathan
Grech into the net. Nadur Y. had a player sent off for a personal foul on
Buttigieg. The Blacks comfortably held their lead throughout the nine
minutes of time added on to take the cup to Ghajnsielem. Nadur Youngsters'
President, Mr. Joseph Portelli, sponsor of this cup competition, presented
the trophy to the Blacks captain, Jonathan Debono. Team: Joseph Grech, Mark
Xuereb, Roderick Apap, James Grima, Jonathan Debono, Frank Galea, Kenneth
Mercieca, Anthony Buttigieg (Charlon Grima), Jonathan Grech, Miguel Refalo
(Joseph Ciantar), Larry Buttigieg. Scorers: Larry Buttigieg,
Charlon Grima, Jonathan Grech

Ghajnsielem beat Xaghra United
5-1 in their last league match of the season. Long condemned to a second
place finish, Ghajnsielem were in control of the match from the kick-off.
Reuben Mercieca and Aloy Ihebulu with two were the first half scorers.
Xaghra reduced the arrears through a Simon Sultana penalty. Loreto
Scicluna and Vince Dimitrov added two more in the second half. After the
match, Mr. Joe Cordina, President of the G.F.A. presented the runners-up
trophy to Loreto Scicluna, Ghajnsielem captain. Zebbug Rovers
edged Xewkija 4-3 in the other league match today.

Ghajnsielem's senior players

Ihebulu, Joe Debono and Tarik Belhaj rounded up the score in the second
half. Ghajnsielem will play against the winner of the Zebbug Rovers/Nadur
Youngsters semi-final tie to be played tomorrow.
Under/16
Blacks in cup final
May
6
Ghajnsielem F.C.'s Under/16 side
beat Victoria Hotspurs 2-1 in a pulsating semi-final tie at the Gozo
Stadium. Ghajnsielem took the lead in the first half from an Anthony
Buttigieg strike. The Blacks survived prolonged periods of Hotspurs
pressure and tried to add to their lead through fast breaks. Hotspurs came
close on more than one occasion the most dangerous of which was direct
from a corner when the ball came off the Blacks' far post. The Victoria
side insisted even further early in the second half and were unlucky not
to even the score when they twice struck the cross-bar. Finally they
equalized following a free-kick taken from the left (see picture below). The Blacks lost their
way completely and looked too tired to react. However, in one of the best
moves of the afternoon Larry Buttigieg saw his shot saved well by
Hotspurs' keeper. Then with time running out, Kenneth Mercieca headed past
the keeper to send Ghajnsielem to the final where they will play against
Under/16 champions Nadur Youngsters. Team: Joseph Grech, Mark
Xuereb, Larry Buttigieg, James Grima, Jonathan Debono, Frank Galea,
Kenneth Mercieca, Anthony Buttigieg (David Debattista), Jonathan Grech,
Miguel Refalo, Roderick Apap. Scorers: Anthony Buttigieg, Kenneth
Mercieca
