The name Għajnsielem Redcoats
was chosen to honour the tens of
thousands of British soldiers
that over a period of more than
a hundred years stayed at Fort
Chambray in Għajnsielem. Sports
such as Football, Cricket and
Tennis were first played in Gozo
within the walls of Fort
Chambray. One can easily say
that the Redcoats introduced
sports in Gozo. The men of the
British army and their women
contributed tremendously to the
economy of the village of
Għajnsielem over the years. They
also helped shape up the
character of the village. It is
only fitting that we continue to
show our gratitude for all of
this by sporting on our uniforms
the nickname of these brave men.

Regarding respect
Għajnsielem F.C. organized a
seminar for players over the age
of 14 today at the meeting hall
of the Local Council of
Għajnsielem. The topic of the
seminar, which was delivered by
ex-Blacks goalkeeper and coach,
Saviour Darmanin, was Respect.
UEFA A Licence coach Darmanin
stressed that respect by all
participants in the game players
(senior and youth), coaches,
club officials, match officials,
spectators and parents towards
each other and towards the game
of football was of fundamental
importance for the future of the
sport. He urged that there needs
to be a change in behaviour by
all concerned in order to bring
further progress at every level
and every aspect of the local
game. He reminded the
Għajnsielem youth and senior
team officials, coaches, players
and parents in attendance that
football was an activity that
has to be enjoyed and that lack
of respect lessens the enjoyment
of the victim of disrespect.
Darmanin provided
a
list of what needs to be done by
each participant in the game,
drawing examples from his own
distinguished career at the top
level of Maltese football.
Loreto Scicluna introduced new
first team coach, Italian Renato
Iacobbe and explained changes in
the way the first team will be
managed this coming season.
Coach Iacobbe also addressed the
players in attendance. He
expressed his delight at joining
the Club and added that he is
confident that the team will
achieve positive results next
year playing attractive
football. The ex-youth team
coach at several Italian clubs
also noted that he has a history
of guiding young players to
higher levels of football in the
game and saw no reason why this
should not continue with the
youthful Għajnsielem team under
his charge.
Scicluna thanked the Għajnsielem
Local Council for the use of the
well-appointed and brand new
meeting hall. He also thanked
vice-Mayor Mr. Franco Ciangura,
who is responsible for culture
and local associations, and
counsillor Larry Buttigieg, who
is responsible for sports, who
were both present at the
seminar, and fellow councillors
Mayor Francis Cauchi, Mr.
Stephen Mercieca and Mr. Peter
Caruana, as well as Executive
Secretary Mrs. Amanda Abela for
their continuous support over
the past twelve months.
Councillor Buttigieg took the
opportunity to remind all those
in attendance about "Clean-up
ix-Xatt l-Aħmar" an activity
scheduled for Saturday July 7.
This is an initiative of the
Local Council in collaboration
with the Għajnsielem Youth
Nursery. Councillors and Nursery
officials, players and coaches
will go to ix-Xatt l-Aħmar early
Saturday morning and carry out a
beach cleaning on the side of
ta' L-Ingliżi.
Refreshments at the seminar were
provided by The Clubhouse. The
party then moved on to the
Għajnsielem F.C. premises for
lunch at The Clubhouse. Nursery
officials Alex Spiteri, Therry
Ciangura and Loreto Scicluna
then presented trophies and
commemorative cards to members
of the championship winning
Under/15 squad.

Blacks blow it
Għajnsielem F.C. wasted a
terrific opportunity to move off
the bottom of the table when
they failed to hold a lead
against fellow cellar dwellers
Victoria Hotspurs. What makes
the 2-2 result such a hard pill
to swallow was the Blacks'
failure to score the third goal
that would have finished off the
Reds. The most glaring miss was
from the penalty spot, when
Charlon Tabone saw his kick
saved by the Hotspurs'
goalkeeper, three minutes from
time. Joseph Attard and Jason
Portelli scored for the Blacks.

own goal. Led by Lucas Cefai,
however, Nadur fought back and
secured a 5-5 draw, which leaves

Winter softball
Autumn on the Run 2011, the
twelve session softball training
programme for girls will come to
an end on Sunday afternoon, with
the twelfth and final session of
this introductory course.
Pleased with the progress shown
by the players, their exemplary
behaviour
and the keen
interest shown in the sport, the
organizers and coaches have
decided to propose a winter
softball training camp that will
follow immediately after
completition of the first
programme. The Għajnsielem Local
Council, who provided financial
support for Autumn on the Run
2011, was satisfied by the
results as well and has
decided to continue to back this
initiative. Mayor Francis Cauchi
and his fellow Councillors'
determination to get girls
involved in sports led to this
initiative, which now seems to
have a momentum of its own.

Tenth year of
www.ghajnsielemfc.com
In June-July of 2012 the
ghajnsielemfc section of
www.ghajnsielem.com will
complete its tenth year of
reporting. The site has been
revamped twice since June of
2002. The football, or better,
sports section of
www.ghajnsielem.com depends
on the technical expertise and
creativity of Kevin Cauchi and
the professional photography of
Joseph Sultana, the two
stalwarts that are also behind
the success of the portal
www.ghajnsielem.com. The
exploits of the Blacks, the
current version as well as the
historical one, and the
boundless enthusiasm of the boys
and girls of Għajnsielem
that is captured sometimes by
photographs snapped by the same
boys and girls, give this
website its enduring appeal.
With words we try to record
events and capture the emotions;
with numbers we try to put those
events in perspective.
Unless we inspire present and
future generations of boys and
girls to participate in sport,
any sport not necessarily
football, and sustain their
interest when it is about to
flag perhaps due to the
sacrifices that they have to
make, our endeavours will have
been in vain. Happy 2012 to all
of you!
