Redcoats win

The Għajnsielem Redcoats won their first ever match this afternoon when they beat the Mellieħa Grand Slammers 8-7 in a match played at the Xagħra Ground. This was the first ever softball match played in Gozo. This match was a great advert to the sport. It was played well, with some superb fielding and terrific hitting. It was the drama, however, that mesmerized the large crowd in attendance.

The match was attended by Dr. Chris Said, the Minister for Justice, a fervent supporter of the Redcoats, who threw the ceremonial first pitch to Redcoats manager Charles Attard, MABS President Mr. Mario Debono, the Mayor of Mellieħa Mr. Robert Cutajar, the Mayor of Għajnsielem Mr. Francis Cauchi, the vice-mayor of Għajnsielem Mr. Franco Ciangura, the Għajnsielem councillor in charge of sports Mr. Larry Buttigieg, councillors Mr. Stephen Mercieca and Mr. Peter Caruana and executive secretary Mrs. Amanda Abela. The Mellieħa and Għajnsielem local councils are both known for their support of sports, baseball and softball in particular, so it was fitting that two teams representing these localities featured in this historic match.

The pre-game festivities consisted of a player-by-player and coach-by-coach introduction and the singing of the national anthem by Daphne Xuereb, the sister of the Redcoats player Denise Xuereb who struck the blow that brought the Għajnsielem team its first win of the season.

After the match the two teams returned to The Clubhouse for lunch. The Redcoats demonstrated their respect for the human and athletic qualities of the Grand Slammers by forming an impromptu guard of honour upon the visitors' entrance to The Clubhouse. This was truly a special day that will long live in the memory of these 13 young girls from Għajnsielem who have captured the hearts of the entire community. Report

On Monday, October 15 Shannon Galea, a prominent softball pitcher in the Canadian and Dutch softball leagues and youth coach conducted a pitching clinic for the benefit of the Għajnsielem Redcoats. The Maltese-Canadian soft
ball player,
who was visiting Malta for the very first time, offered to cross over to Gozo for a two-hour long training session at the Sannat Ground. The session was greatly appreciated by the players and coaches of the only youth softball team in Malta. Although Shannon's stay in Gozo was very brief a special relationship has been formed and one hopes that should Ms Galea return to Malta in the near future she will again set some time aside to check on the progress of the Redcoats. We all wish Shannon the best of luck in her career as a softball player. Photos

Għajnsielem Redcoats

The Għajnsielem Redcoats girls softball team will this year be participating in the Malta Baseball & Softball Association Youth Softball League. The participation was made possible with the help of the Għajnsielem Local Council. This will be the official logo of the team designed by Mr Paul Stellini. The name Għajnsielem Redcoats was chosen to honour the tens of thousands of British soldiers that over a period of more than a hundred years stayed at Fort Chambray in Għajnsielem. Sports such as Football, Cricket and Tennis were first played in Gozo within the walls of Fort Chambray. One can easily say that the Redcoats introduced sports in Gozo. The men of the British army and their women contributed tremendously to the economy of the village of Għajnsielem over the years. They also helped shape up the character of the village. It is only fitting that we continue to show our gratitude for all of this by sporting on our uniforms the nickname of these brave men.
