Hotspurs in pole position

Għajnsielem F.C. will have to beat Victoria H. in the last match of the season to pull even with the leaders and force a decider for the league championship. This because Hotspurs beat Nadur Y. in their clash this week-end. This situation is no different than the last time that these two clubs went head-to-head for league honours. In 1974 the Blacks needed to beat Nadur in the final match of the season to pull even with Hotspurs. They beat Nadur 2-1 in a very tense match Leli Refalo scored twice one in each half to set up the decider against Hotspurs. Then on June 8, 1974 the Blacks beat Victoria Hotspurs 1-0 to win their fifth consecutive championship.

draw against Pieta

Ghajnsielem F.C. registered a 2-2 draw against Pieta Hotspurs of the M.F.A. first division in a match played late this afternoon at St. Aloysius Ground in Birkirkara. In the G.F.A. first division Sannat Lions beat Kerċem Ajax 3-0 and thus condemned the latter to relegation to the second division. Their place in the top tier will be taken by St. Laurence Spurs, the new champions of the second division. Sannat Lions' bid to avoid 6th place and a playoff against the runners-up of the second division, Xagħra United, was set-back Sunday, when S.K. Victoria Wanderers beat Xewkija Tigers 2-0. The Victoria side will confirm their first division status with a win over Kerċem this weekend.

Nadur firmly in contention

After dropping so many points and failing to win a single match in the second round, Nadur Youngsters have moved back in contention with a 3-1 win over reigning champions Sannat Lions. Blacks back on track

Għajnsielem F.C. beat Kerċem Ajax three nil in an evening match played at the Sannat Ground. The three points lift Għajnsielem to a first place tie with Victoria Hotspurs. The result means that the Blacks' title challenge is back on track. After two dispiriting results, Għajnsielem, led by player-coach Alex Simoncic who earlier this week took over from Alex Spiteri, put on a dominant display that saw the Blacks return to winning plays and complete the season sweep of relegation troubled Kerċem Ajax.  match report

Blacks beaten by
Lions

Għajnsielem F.C. missed an opportunity to take over the leadership of the G.F.A. first division when they dropped to a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Sannat Lions. Għajnsielem conceded a goal in the fourth minute of the match scored by ex-Black Errol Grima. Despite the incessant pressure they placed on the Lions for a good hour they could not find an equalizer. As the minutes ticked by in the second half, the Blacks’ manouvre started to lose its lucidity and they looked more likely to concede than score. Seven minutes minutes from time John Camilleri scored Sannat’s second to condemn the Blacks to their fourth defeat of the season. match report

Sudden impact--Simoncic helps Blacks beat Kerċem

Għajnsielem F.C. edged Kerċem Ajax 2-1 in a tricky encounter that even at this juncture of the season could have compromised the Blacks’ title aspirations. The numerous Blacks supporters at the Gozo Stadium had their eyes focused on one-time nemesis, Alex Simoncic, the transfer window signing from Nadur Y. The new number 5 in Għajnsielem’s Starting XI, unfazed by the extra attention, did what he probably expected to do: he led the Blacks to victory.  match report

Għajnsielem F.C. acquire Simoncic from Nadur

Ghajnsielem F.C. completed the major transfer of the local winter transfer market when they surprisingly snapped up Alex Simoncic from Nadur Youngsters. The 33-year old Serbian will join the Club with immediate effect.
Simoncic will be unveiled as an Ghajnsielem F.C. player this Sunday, the 17th of January at Ghajnsielem Football Club during an 11 a.m. rally organised by the committee. The experienced central midfielder agreed to a three year-contract after he expressed his desire to play for the Blacks and accepted personal terms offered by the Club. Several other major clubs had shown interest in signing the player, but Simoncic was determined to play for the Blacks and thus become part of this great club. Alex Simoncic's record of success speaks for itself. He has helped Nadur Youngsters win championships and other major honours both as a player and as a player-coach.

Hotspurs Champions

Għajnsielem F.C. were three minutes away from forcing a decider for the 2009/10 league championship. Their defence, which had been fantastic in repelling Victoria Hotspurs' desperate attempts to score the all-important equalizer (to Thiago dos Santos' first half goal), was finally undone by a deep cross to the second post. The ball was not cleared. And a Hotspurs forward nodded the ball past Joseph Grech and into the net. The Blacks, reduced to ten men after the dismissal of Brian Meilak in the 73rd minute, could find no way back. The referee's final whistle left Victoria Hotspurs three points ahead of Għajnsielem in the league standings and, therefore, champions of the G.F.A. first division. match report

Rampant Blacks beat Nadur

Għajnsielem F.C. beat Nadur Youngsters 4-1 in what was in effect a playoff to determine who would go on to challenge leaders Victoria Hotspurs for the 2009/10 league championship. The three points take the Blacks equal on points with the leaders who have a game in hand. Hotspurs are expected to beat Nadur in their next match. This means that Għajnsielem will have to beat Victoria H. in the last match of the season to force a decider for the championship. If the Blacks produce the kind of football that they conjured at the midway point in the second half, ten minutes of football that swept Nadur off the Gozo Stadium, then they have a chance. match report

Blacks' challenge derailed

For the third time this season, Għajnsielem F.C.'s progress in the league has been interrupted by Xewkija Tigers. The 0-2 defeat at the hands of the Tigers sets the Blacks back but does not eliminate them from the title race. Għajnsielem played well for most of the match, and at times played the best football of the season. The problem was that they failed to convert on any one of the numerous chances that they created. As soon as Għajnsielem pushed more men forward in search of a breakthrough they looked vulnerable at the back. A Xewkija goal looked inevitable. Eventually it arrived somewhat fortuitously for the Tigers. A harsh penalty was awarded against the Blacks which Basil Chibueze converted. Rodney Buttigieg sealed the victory for his side with a goal late in the match. Victoria Hotspurs beat Kerċem Ajax 5-0 in the following match to pull three points clear of the Blacks. match report

Under/14 lose to Oratory Youths

Għajnsielem F.C.'s Under/14 team continued with its up-and-down season, when they lost to Oratory Youths 0-1. Although the loss is disappointing, it is a vast improvement on the result against the same team earlier this season, when the Blacks dropped to their heaviest defeat of the season.

10-man Wanderers
frustrate Reds

Victoria Hotspurs and S.K. Victoria Wanderers featured in a 0-0 draw in this weekend's only first division match. The Reds, who had a numerical advantage for most of the match due to the dismissal of a Wanderers player, thus wasted a great opportunity to widen their lead atop the first division table. The result keeps not only Għajnsielem and Nadur in contention, but also Xewkija Tigers and Sannat Lions.

Nadur nearly inflict a defeat upon Victoria Hotspurs

Nadur Youngsters recovered from their recent defeat at the hands of Għajnsielem F.C. by battling to a 1-1 draw against league leaders Victoria Hotspurs. The Whites outplayed the Reds and would have deserved the three points from this match. The result is important for the Blacks because it prevented Hotspurs from building a five-point lead over Għajnsielem in the league standings. It also means that with a win in their next match, the Blacks will move into sole possession of second place and main challengers of Victoria Hotspurs in the championship race.
