Blacks
comeback falls short
Għajnsielem F.C. lost to
Xagħra United 3-4 this afternoon in
a G.F.A. first division, second
round match at the Gozo Stadium.
Għajnsielem
conceded three first half goals
and then went four down early in
the second half. But three goals
in five minutes scored by Jason
Portelli, Charlon Tabone and
Joseph Buttigieg gave the Blacks
hope. Għajnsielem missed two
great chances late in the game
that would have earned them
their first point of the second
round. The
Blacks remain three points
adrift of Victoria Hotspurs at
the bottom of the table. The
Reds lost heavily to new league
leaders Nadur Youngsters 1-6.

Tenth year of
www.ghajnsielemfc.com
In June-July of 2012 the
ghajnsielemfc section of
www.ghajnsielem.com will
complete its tenth year of
reporting. The site has been
revamped twice since June of
2002. The football, or better,
sports section of
www.ghajnsielem.com depends
on the technical expertise and
creativity of Kevin Cauchi and
the professional photography of
Joseph Sultana, the two
stalwarts that are also behind
the success of the portal
www.ghajnsielem.com. The
exploits of the Blacks, the
current version as well as the
historical one, and the
boundless enthusiasm of the boys
and girls of Għajnsielem
that is captured sometimes by
photographs snapped by the same
boys and girls, give this
website its enduring appeal.
With words we try to record
events and capture the emotions;
with numbers we try to put those
events in perspective.
Unless we inspire present and
future generations of boys and
girls to participate in sport,
any sport not necessarily
football, and sustain their
interest when it is about to
flag perhaps due to the
sacrifices that they have to
make, our endeavours will have
been in vain. Happy 2012 to all
of you!

Also
present were Hon. MP Anton Refalo,
legal counsel of Għajnsielem F.C.,
former Club president Mr. Joe
Cauchi, president Mr. Angelo Cauchi and
treasurer Mr. Elvin Tabone of Għaqda Mużikali San
Ġuzepp and a number of current
Blacks such as Joseph Buttigieg
(our esteemed chef and captain),
Joseph Attard, who is also a
member of the committee, Alex
Simoncic and many others, former Għajnsielem F.C. players
including club greats such as
the Cutajar brothers Vincent,
Nikol and Karmnu, the
Xuereb brothers Mario and
Victor, Karmnu Xuereb, and
players of more recent vintage
such as Paul Xuereb, Tarik
Belhadj and ex-captains Ivan
Vella, Sandro Spiteri and Frank Buttigieg.

Dr.
Chris Said, who was accompanied
by Mrs. Said and their son
Benjamin, presented a personalized
card commemorating each
participant's involvement in
this summer of sports activities
to each young participant. Dr.
Said explained the program to
those in attendance. He noted
that this was a joint initiative
between the Secretariat
responsible for Local Councils
and the Secretariat responsible
for youths and sports. The funds
they provided to cover the
expenses of a 16-day program of
sports activities were then
matched by the Local Council of
Għajnsielem.
He noted that Sports Summer Fun
2011 coordinated by Għajnsielem
FIT4LIFE, made up of members of
Għajnsielem Youth Nursery, was part of the
scheme's third year and aside
from confirming that the program
will be extended for a fourth
year, he noted how the funds
committed by the two
secretariats were growing each
year, as were the number of
localities involved and the
number of sports activities
organized. Dr. Said commented
that he was impressed by the
success of Sports Summer Fun
2011 and that this success story
confirmed his view that sports
initiatives of this nature would
be more effective when the local
councils worked hand-in-hand
with local organisations such as Għajnsielem Youth Nursery and
Għajnsielem F.C.

Mr.
Bernard Vassallo, the
hard-working Chairman of Kunsill
Malti għall-iSport, a person who
embodies the spirit of Sports
Summer Fun 2011, with a
multi-disciplinary background,
congratulated by name every
single coordinator of the
program. He observed that the
benefits of programs such as
Sports Summer Fun 2011 go beyond
health and fitness, and that
such programs assist youngsters
in their development as
individuals through their social
and educational dimension. He
reiterated Dr. Said's commitment
to this scheme, expressed his
pleasure at the success of this
particular program and embraced
the coordinators' commitment to
expand this program to cover
also the not so young. He
confirmed that indeed the
Kunsill Malti għall-iSports was
at the forefront of the
Government's commitment to
strengthen the local sports
culture and sports in general.
Mr. Vassallo, who was
accompanied by his wife
Michelle, also visited Bern
Hersey, the health and fitness
centre located on the Club
presence in the company of Club
President Mr. Martin Xerri and
Club Counsel, Dr. Anton
Refalo. Here too he was
impressed by the quality of the
premises, facilities and
equipment that were available
for the players of Għajnsielem
F.C. and the people of
Għajnsielem.

Mayor Francis Cauchi closed this
segment of the event with a
speech that reflected the deep
satisfaction that he personally
and the Local Council as a whole
felt for the success of the
program. Mr. Cauchi thanked Dr.
Said, Mr. Clyde Puli and Mr.
Bernard Vassallo for their
support and congratulated the
boys and girls who participated
in the sport activities and the
dedicated coordinators who led
the program. He expressed his
determination to get more girls,
beyond the three who took part
this year, to get involved in
next year's program. Mr. Cauchi
concluded by noting that his
local council was now enjoying a
string of successes working
closely with local non-profit
organisations and together these
local partnerships were pulling
off a series of noteworthy
feats.

Loreto Scicluna welcomed the special
guests in attendance, and, in the
name of Alex Spiteri, Therry
Ciangura, Clint Azzopardi, Frank
Buttigieg, Paul Xuereb and
Joseph Scicluna, congratulated
the boys and girls for their
commitment to the program and
thanked Dr. Said, Mr. Puli (who
could not attend because he was
abroad), Mr. Vassallo and the
Local Council of Għajnsielem
for the funding provided
through the Scheme. He also appealed to
those present to continue to
believe in and invest in this
group of individuals, whose sole
interest was to make important
contributions to the future of
the community.

consisted of a rugby triangular
at the Gozo Stadium (the
combined team of Jaguars and
Wild Pumas drew one match and
won another). Leopards (two
draws) and Cheetahs (one win and
one loss), however, provided
great entertainment in this

Jaguars sweep Day 3 events
On
Day 3 of Sports Summer Fun 2011
Jaguars swept all three events
and in the process edged closer
to Wild Pumas who still lead
overall. Leopards did well and
finished second on the day and
are tied for second with Jaguars
overall. Cheetahs, who suffered
a weight disadvantage in the
decisive tug of war, earned
everyone's sympathy with their
meticulous interpretation of the
mummja event. Josef Vella was
immense in the tug of war for
the Jaguars, who were boosted by
newcomers Anthony Xuereb and
Armando Xuereb.

Winter softball
Autumn on the Run 2011, the
twelve session softball training
programme for girls will come to
an end on Sunday afternoon, with
the twelfth and final session of
this introductory course.
Pleased with the progress shown
by the players, their exemplary
behaviour
and the keen
interest shown in the sport, the
organizers and coaches have
decided to propose a winter
softball training camp that will
follow immediately after
completition of the first
programme. The Għajnsielem Local
Council, who provided financial
support for Autumn on the Run
2011, was satisfied by the
results as well and has
decided to continue to back this
initiative. Mayor Francis Cauchi
and his fellow Councillors'
determination to get girls
involved in sports led to this
initiative, which now seems to
have a momentum of its own.
