Għajnsielem F.C.
continued their march towards
the fast-approaching second
phase of the champinship with
another lopsided win over one of
the weakest teams in the
league, Kerċem Ajax. The main
issue today was whether the two
teams would leave the Nadur
Ground with their dignity
intact. Although the 10-0 final
score was severe on the losers,
the Blacks fully discharged
their obligation to respect
their opponents first by
competing hard and then by not
running up the score unduly.
Kerċem, on their part, played
hard from start to finish. They
defended admirably and attacked
on every opportunity. So both
teams left the field with their
heads held high.
The Blacks
opened the score in the first
minute through an own-goal. In
the 10th minute Alberto Xuereb
scored his first with a low
diagonal shot, this after he had
shot high on a number of
occasions. Then Damon Hili
scored his first with a hard
shot from outside the penalty
area. Jamie Vella was determined
to get himself on the scoresheet
and after two frustrating
misses, he headed in the rebound
from his own shot. With the goal
out of the way Vella
concentrated once again on
setting his team-mates up for
the score. Alberto Xuereb was
the first beneficiary, he
concluded well following a neat
1-2 with Vella. Captain Hili too
was in a generous mood, to be
fair, he always is, and he
helped Christian Dingli break
his duck with a clever pass.
Alberto Xuereb, the Blacks'
third assist producer set Marco
Ciangura for an easy score.
Ciangura met the sharp cross
with an elegant sliding finish
at the far post. Damon Hili
scored his second and the
Blacks' eight on the stroke of
half-time, with a thunderous
volley from distance. Alex
Spiteri introduced Massimo
Mallia, Armando Xuereb, Ismael
Belhadj, Christian Cauchi and
Josef Vella in the second half.
