MATCH REPORT

Għajnsielem F.C. brought the four-game losing streak with which they started the season to an end with an easy 8-0 win over second division side St. Laurence Spurs in the preliminary round of the G.F.A. Cup. The Blacks jumped to a four-goal first half lead and cruised with four more goals in the second half. Roberto Rivellino Petriaggi led the way with five goals. Petriaggi was one goal short of equalling Mario Gauci's club record of six goals in one match (vs S.K. Victoria W. in the 1995/96 first division competition). The Blacks came two goals short of equalling the club record for biggest win (a 10-0 win over Għarb Rangers in the 2002/03 edition of the G.F.A. Cup).

The Blacks opened the score in the 19th minute when Petriaggi scored from the spot after the referee awarded the Blacks a penalty-kick for a foul by goalkeeper Sanuel Micallef on Manwel Cordiina. Three minutes later Petriaggi doubled the lead when he shot home from a narrow angle follwoing an Alex Simoncic corner-kick. In the 27th minute Cordina made it three with a spectacular over-head kick. In the 34th minute Petriaggi completed his hat-trick following good work by Jason Portelli and Joseph Attard.

Barely two minutes into the second session Cordina scored the Blacks' fifth goal. Three minutes later Għajnsielem scored their sixth when, once again following a corner, Petriaggi sent the ball towards the Spurs' goal, and managed to score despite Franklin Grima's desperate attempts to clear it. David Buttigieg, who came on for Micallef, saved Attard's 76th minute effort and Jonathan Grech, a second half substitute, was in the right place to nod the ball into an empty net. Five minutes from time Petriaggi scored his fifth and the Blacks' eight goal of the afternoon. Glen Cutajar made his senior debut for the Club when he came on as a second half substitute. The Blacks will play Kerċem Ajax in the quarter-final next Sunday.
