MATCH REPORT

Għajnsielem F.C. returned to action after a month-long lay-off with an easy win over Xagħra United in the quarter-finals of the  knock-out competition. Although this was a lopsided win, the Blacks seemed rusty at time. As a matter of fact, they even trailed at one point and were still tied at two at the half-time break. The Blacks' superior quality, however, eventually started to show and the goals came at regular intervals after the restart. Għajnsielem played with Christian Cauchi in goal due to the absence through injury of Owen Xuereb. Another absentee was the injured Andrea Grima. His place on the right was taken by Marco Ciangura and Christian Dingli returned to the side at left back. Andrew Attard continued with his ever-present streak at centre-back. Damon Hili was flanked by Alberto Xuereb on the left and Ismael Belhadj on the right. Jamie Vella was the centre-forward.

Dingli gave the Blacks the perfect start when he volleyed home following a short clearance from a Hili corner-kick. The Blacks could not impose their game, however, and Xagħra slowly came into the match and made the most of their opportunities with two Charlon Said goals from as many shots on Cauchi's goal. The Blacks kept their composure and Xuereb's deflected shot brought the score level following a Hili through pass.

After the break everything came a little easier for the Blacks and the goals started pouring in. Xuereb scored his second from a left-wing cross from Vella. Attard scored with a shot taken from beyond the half-way line. Vella tapped in from underneath the Xagħra goal frame. Vella scored his second when he squeezed the ball past a badly placed Xagħra keeper. Attard scored an even better looking shot taken from his own half. Hili rounded the Xagħra keeper following a breakaway before sliding the ball into an empty goal. He then set up substitute Josef Vella for a quick goal moments after the latter had been introduced in place of Belhadj. The other substitute, debutant Gordon Zerafa had earlier come close with a low shot. Marco Ciangura struck the bar. Meli ade the final score 9-3 for the Blacks with a late consolation goal.

Next up for the Blacks are the final three league games of the season, which will be played in the span of seven days and a semi-final cup tie against either Nadur Youngsters or Qala Saints. (Photography Massimo Mallia)
