Esso Cup
The Esso Cup
was introduced in the 1958/59 season as a knockout competition reserved
for first division teams. The precious trophy was donated by Esso
Standard, through the Gozo agent Marjanu Xuereb.
In the semi-final
of the first edition, Ghajnsielem beat the Salesian Youths 2-1 on goals scored by John Debono
and Anthony Bajada. The Blacks dominated the final against Xewkija and
emerged 3-0 victors. John Debono with two, and Anthony Bajada were again
the scorers. Ghajnsielem appeared in the final again in 1967/68 when they
lost 0-2 to S.K. Calypsians. The Blacks came up short again two years
later, in 1969/70, this time losing 1-2 after extra time to Nadur
Youngsters. The Blacks finally brought the trophy back to Ghajnsielem in
1970/71 when they beat Xaghra United 3-0 (Vincent Cutajar, Karmnu Cutajar,
Toni Cauchi). They repeated as winners one year later when they narrowly
beat S.K. Calypsians 1-0 (Paul Debono). Unfortunately, Ghajnsielem lost
0-1 to Xaghra United in the 1972/73 season, the last time this competition
was held. |
