Alex Spiteri
made his debut for the Club February 28, 1976 in a minor league match
against Xewkija Tigers. He was pressed into action to replace Salvinu Rapa
in goal as the regular goalkeeper was too sick to play. The Blacks lost
0-1 conceding a goal in the last minute. Alex repeated this feat with the
senior team when he also made two emergency appearances in goal later in
his career. It was in
the 1976/77 season that Alex made his first appearance in the minors
team's defence. This happened on November 14, 1976, in a 2-3 loss against Gharb Rangers,
also in an emergency situation (due to a senior team fixture on the same weekend).
In the following season he was the captain and a key figure in the minor
league team that won the third championship in Club history. In that same
season he also played for the Under/18 side. More importantly he made his
senior team debut in yet another emergency in the 1-0 win over Qala St.
Joseph on October 22, 1977. Still short of his 14th birthday, Alex thus
became the youngest player on record ever to appear for the Club's senior
side.
In the following season, Alex made more appearances for the senior
and under/18 teams and continued to captain the minor league side. He scored the winning penalty in the knockout for the minors that season.
Alex played in defence for the first team until the 1981/82 season. He scored his
first goal for the Club against Munxar Falcons in a 2-0 win on November
30, 1981. Then Alex had to leave the country
to work abroad. Upon his return he featured mostly for the Club's reserves
with whom he won a championship in 1988/89.
After his
retirement Alex became involved in the administration of the Club where he
served in various capacities in the late eighties and early nineties,
including those of Club president and secretary. He has recently also
served for the Club in the positions of G.F.A. council member and club
delegate.
However, it
was in the 1990/91 season that Alex's true value for the Club became
apparent. Early in that season he took over as coach of the Under/14 side.
Under his tutelage the young Blacks won their championship that same
season. Most of the team than competed and dominated the Under/16
competitions for the next two seasons winning two championships and the
knockout competition. In 1993/94, with Alex's attention split on the
senior and minor league teams, the youngsters' performance suffered but
they still managed to win the Under/16 knockout competition.
Alex then
moved on and made a useful contribution to the Gozo F.C. at various levels
in coaching and administrative roles, most notably as coach of the youth
sides in the 1994/95 season and of the Gozo F.C. first team for part of
the 1996/97 season.
Alex's
return to the Club's nursery in the 1998/99 season coincides with the
resumption of success at youth level for the Club. Apart from the
silverware detailed below, Alex's commitment to the Club has resulted in a
steady supply of young players to the Club's senior side from the early
nineties to the present.
In
this his first season as first team coach, Alex led the
team, which apart from two foreigners was based entirely
on Ghajnsielem players, to a creditable third place finish and to a
convincing triumph in the Super Cup. Alex followed this up
with a strong start to the 2004/05 season taking the team
to first place right up to the loss against title
challengers Xewkija. After two more matches, a draw
against Nadur Y. and a win against Zebbug R., Alex, in his
role as secretary of the Club, led the pursuit for an
outside coach and eventually handed control of the team to
Eddie Vella.
With
the Club's return to a homegrown player strategy, Spiteri
resumed control of the Blacks in 2005/06. Although the
Blacks struggled badly in the league, they still managed
to win the Jum il-Helsien Cup under Spiteri beating
Xewkija T. on penalties. One match later, Spiteri resigned
from the head coaching role for personal reasons.
