Brian, the
Club captain, is one
of the most gifted players in our side. The enormous success he enjoyed
immediately after he made his first team breakthrough has become the
standard by which he is judged. He is an elusive right-sided player with a
thirst for going forward to supply a telling cross and occasionally to cut
inside and have a crack at goal himself.
He featured
in the minor league sides of the early nineties, winning the Under/14,
Under/16 championships and Under/16 knockout. He was also prominent in the
Under/18 and Under/21 (twice) championship winning sides.
In the 1996/97
season he was chosen as the G.F.A.'s Most Promising Player. Two years
later he was the G.F.A.'s Footballer of the Year in the First Division
(Premier format). Indeed, he was outstanding in 1998/99 contributing 11
goals in the Club's drive to return to the top flight and in the pursuit
of three cup competitions. At one stage he was on the score sheet seven
games in succession equaling a record established by Club great, Loreto
Galea. He was unstoppable in the 6-2 triumph over
Xaghra United in the Super Cup Final. He mesmerized the Xaghra defence
with his runs and chipped in with two exquisite goals. Brian was the Club's Under/21 Player
of the Year that season.
Brian was part of the treble-winning 2000/1 side.
He had an excellent 2002/03 season, playing for the most part in the role
of stopper and closed the season in his natural role of right wing-back.
He helped the Club to an Independence Cup and G.F.A. Cup triumph, as well
as a second place finish in the league. His best season so far, however,
was the 2003/04 season when he played in a variety of
roles in midfield depending on the team's needs. He scored
three times and assisted in many other goals. The crowning
performance arrived in the Super Cup final against
Victoria Hotspurs when he had a hand in three of the
Blacks goals. Brian was rewarded with the Club's Player of
the Year award, and more significantly with the G.F.A.'s
Footballer of the Year honour.
Brian
took over the Club captaincy before the start of the
2004/05 season and had the honour of following in the
footsteps of Salvinu Xuereb and Loreto Galea as the third
Blacks captain to lift the league championship trophy.
Although he had less opportunity to shine in this season
due to the largely defensive duty he fulfilled in defence
and midfield, he still had a terrific season. He had the
honour of claiming the first ever Best Player in Gozo
award at the Westin Malta Football Awards.
Brian has
been on the Gozo F.C. squad since 1996/97 and was a regular in the
side for long stretches. His performances for the side in 2002/03 were
rewarded when he was chosen as Gozo F.C. player of the year for the
season. He was the captain of the side in the 2003/04 season when he led
the team to promotion to the first division.
Brian has also played for Malta at Under/14
level.
