DANIEL
BOGDANOVIC
Date of birth: March 26, 1980
Nationality: Maltese
Position: striker
Appearances for Club: 21
Goals for Club: 21
Daniel Bogdanovic first featured for the Blacks as a guest-player in the
1998/99 season. He played against Xewkija Tigers in the Jum il-Helsien Cup
final and against Sannat Lions in the Super Cup semi-final. He
scored from the penalty spot in the 2-1 win over the
Lions.
Daniel has played in attack for Sliema W., Naxxar L.,
Valletta and Marsaxlokk over the past five seasons. He has scored a total
of 38 Premier division goals in 71 (Premier) appearances with these clubs.
The prolific striker
has also played abroad in Yugoslavia, his country of origin, in Tunisia (Esperance
Sportive Tunis), in Hungary (Vasas SC) and Bulgaria (Cherno
More Varna).
Daniel
has also played for Malta at Under/21 (one appearance) and
senior level. He has made 16 full international
appearances, in which he also managed to score a goal.
Daniel made his debut on February 9, 2002 in a Rothmans
International Tournament match against Jordan (2-1). He
scored his only goal at this level against Kazakhstan in a
2-2 draw friendly match on February 12, 2003. His last
appearance was in another home friendly against Poland
(0-4) December 14, 2003.
Daniel,
who has reached double figures in Premier division goals
three times in four seasons, has not had the best of
starts to this year scoring twice in seven appearances,
which is below his strike rate of over a goal every other
match. Bogdanovic has often enjoyed stretches in which he
carried his team on his young shoulders. The voters of the
M.F.A. Player of the Month award have noticed this and
twice recognized him as the best among his peers: December
2001 (with Naxxar Lions) and April 2004 (with Marsaxlokk).
The
tall, slender physique, superior quickness,
surprising speed and poisonous finish make Bogdanovic a
tough customer for any defence to handle. The Blacks can
indeed consider themselves lucky to have landed the
services of such a gifted player who has yet to reach the
pinnacle of his career. Daniel is married in Ghajnsielem
and resides here as well,
so in a sense it is also a coming home of sorts for this
brilliant striker.
Daniel
was a key figure in Ghajnsielem's successful bid to become
2004/05 league champions. He contributed 15 league goals
to the Blacks' record haul of 57, often breaking the
deadlock with one of his strikes. Daniel often sacrificed
himself going back to midfield and sometimes even defence
to lend a hand with the team under pressure.
