David
Carabott is one of the greatest Maltese players of all
time. The full-back/wing-back with electrifying speed has
had an illustrious career both in Malta's top division and
with the national team.
David
spent the best part of his career with Hibernians, the
club he joined after leaving his home town team Marsaxlokk.
He played with the Paolites for thirteen seasons, winning
two league championships (1993/94 and 1994/95), the Super
Cup (1994) and the F.A. Trophy (1997/98) with this side.
He featured in 221 premier league matches, scoring 57
times. In 2000/01 he joined Valletta. This was a good
season to be at the capital city because Valletta swept to
the championship and triumphed in all five cup
competitions (F.A. Trophy, Super Cup, Super 5 Cup,
Lowenbrau Cup and Centenary Cup). After playing for three
seasons with Valletta, amassing 63 more Premier division
appearances and six more goals, David joined Marsaxlokk.
He was immediately given the captaincy and in his first
season there the club exceeded all expectations by
reaching the final of the F.A. Trophy and landing a
U.E.F.A. Cup spot. Marsaxlokk made several off-season
acquisitions. This brought with it even higher demands on
the team. The modest start to 2004/05 created tensions
within the camp which eventually resulted in this
temporary parting of ways between David and Marsaxlokk.
Carabott accumulated 26 Premier appearances with
Marsaxlokk; he found the net on three occasions.
David's
stature at international level exceeds even his remarkable
achievements at Club level. He has appeared a record 123
times for the Maltese national team. He made his debut at
home in a European championship qualifier against
Switzerland November 15, 1987. He scored the first of his
thirteen goals (second only to Carmel Busuttil) against
Cyprus at home in a 1-1 draw on November 23, 1988. David
made his 100th appearance on April 25, 2001 in a World Cup
qualifier against Iceland (1-4). David, who captained
Malta on numerous occasions, made his final appearance for
the national team in the 0-4 loss to Belarus on February
18, 2004 in the Malta International Tournament. Shortly
after he announced his retirement from the national side.
David deserved a proper send-off and this took place in
the home friendly against Norway, February 9, 2005.
Carabott led Malta out as captain and not only fixed the
total caps record at 123 but also became the first player
to appear for Malta while playing for a Gozitan club.
Incredibly,
David Carabott has never been honoured with the M.F.A.
Footballer of the Year trophy. He was awarded the Player
of the Month three times, all with Hibernians: August
1994, February 1999 and April 1999. Although he has lost
some of the speed and quickness which he possessed in his
youth, David is still a footballer of the highest quality.
Before his shock move to Ghajnsielem F.C. he was rumoured
heading towards Birkirkara F.C.
